A number of statues depicting US presidential candidate Donald Trump without his clothes on were erected in various US cities yesterday morning.

The statues were unveiled in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Seattle. Titled “The Emperor Has No Balls”, the project was devised by the anarchist collective INDECLINE, presenting present Trump in an unflattering and humiliating way.

A spokesperson for INDECLINE told The Washington Post the project was inspired by the Hans Christian Anderson story “The Emperor’s New Clothes” which depicts a vain and overconfident leader. The spokesperson also said the project is meant to poke fun at the tendency for those in authoritarian positions to raise monuments of themselves.

The statues are credited to a Las Vegas-based artist called Ginger, who said he was approached by INDECLINE because of his pervious work designing monsters for horror movies and haunted houses. A video of Ginger creating these statues went up on INDECLINE’s YouTube page.

The New York City statue became a busy tourist spot until the parks and recreation department took it down. A spokeswoman for the NYC parks and recreation centre stated: “NYC Parks stands firmly against any unpermitted erection in city parks, no matter how small.”

Seattle based soccer club Seattle Sounders FC 2 (S2) lost their initial two away games of the season despite having entered the road trip undefeated with three wins. First, they played the Tulsa Roughnecks who won 4–3 on Thursday. Next, S2 traveled to nearby Oklahoma City to battle Energy FC on Saturday but lost 2–1.

The first half of the game against Tulsa was very exciting with five goals within the first twenty five minutes. Gibson Bardley scored immediately (2′) for the Roughnecks. This prompted two quick goals from Qudus Lawal who scored two along (9′, 10′) to put the Sounders back in the lead. Eli Galbraith-Knapp scored for the opposition in the 19th minute to bring the teams level but Jimmy Ockford (25′) notched one shortly after to give the Sounders three goals before the half. After the break, the Roughnecks were able to keep the Sounders from scoring but pulled ahead with two goals of their own from Steven Miller (69′) and Lucas Cordeiro (77′).

The Sounders struck first in the game against the Energy with a goal from Darwin Jones in the 33rd minute. This was a short-lived lead, however, with Oklahoma City scoring five minutes later with a goal from Chuy Sanchez. Energy FC might have led going into the half when they were awarded a penalty kick but Michael Thomas was unable to convert. The Sounders almost held on for a draw but Danni König scored in the 86th minute.

S2 next faces the Vancouver Whitecaps 2 away while the Roughnecks are to travel to Kentucky to face Louisville City FC. The Energy are to host Saint Louis FC.

California-based soccer club LA Galaxy triumphed 1–0 over Seattle Sounders FC of Washington yesterday with a header from Alan Gordon.

Both sides were missing a key player; Clint Dempsey was out for the Sounders with a hamstring injury while Robbie Keane missed the match with a groin injury. This was LA’s first win since opening day and are now 2-2-2 while Seattle experienced their second loss of the season and stand at 2-2-1.

Seattle had ten opportunities on the night saved by Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Lamar Neagle could not find the back of the net with four on target. In the 53rd minute Sounders’ Rose had a clear shot against goal; Penedo again made the save when the ball was struck directly at the keeper.

The lone goal started with a cross from Juninho on the right side which found center back Omar Gonzalez. He was able to head the ball back to Gordon who then easily scored. This ended a goal drought for LA who were scoreless for 290 minutes, last scoring on March 21 against Houston.

LA next face Sporting Kansas City at home while the Sounders continue their road trip to the Colorado Rapids.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 (S2) association football club have maintained a streak with their third home win at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila, Washington last night, this time against Portland Timbers 2 (T2).

T2 struck first when defender Harrison Delbridge headed the ball in from a free kick in the 30th minute. Seattle responded with Pablo Rossi converting a penalty kick in the 47th minute and Giuliano Frano tapping a lobbed pass into the net in the 88th minute. Final score, 2–1 Seattle.

In the 30th minute, T2 midfielder Blair Gavin placed the ball nicely for Delbridge who connected cleanly with the ball to head it past S2 goalkeeper Charlie Lyon. At half, the game still stood with Portland in the lead 1–0. In the first minutes of the second half, S2 Andy Craven was pulled down in the penalty box by T2 Andy Thoma. Rossi was able to convert the penalty with a strong strike to the top left corner. T2 keeper Jake Gleeson was unable to stop the shot. Frano’s goal came in the 88th minute as he was able to chip the ball into the net after nice build up play by the Sounders. The Timbers did look dangerous on corners having earned 8 to Seattle’s 3.

The Timbers suffered their first loss of their season while the Sounders experienced their first ever comeback victory. This was also the first match between the two Cascadia rivals. T2 now stand at 7 points with a record of 2–1–1. S2 and Arizona United SC are now the only Western Conference teams still undefeated. Portland next faces defending champions Sacramento Republic FC away on Saturday, April 18 while Seattle hits the road to battle Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Thursday, April 16.

The developers of CyanogenMod, an open source free Android-based operating system for smartphones, announced yesterday their incorporation following a successful venture capital campaign which netted the open-source project a US$7 million nest egg, and plan to roll out a simple installation app on Google Play for their Android firmware.

Android runs nearly 80% of new mobile devices; CyanogenMod operates on at least 7 or 8 million of those. CyanogenMod replaces the read-only-memory image in android devices which have been ‘rooted’ —control acquired of the device’s superuser account— allowing continuing development for, and backporting abilities of new generations of the operating system to, older devices.

Investor Mitch Lasky wrote on his blog “We believe that CM is poised to become one of the largest mobile operating systems in the world.” Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures are part of the capital providers to form Cyanogen Inc.

“The only limitation we have right now is with the number of engineers and designers we currently have. As we hire more people and build this company, we’ll be able to work on so many cool things”, said Koushik ‘koush’ Dutta, who took questions alongside Steve ‘cyanogen’ Kondik and team social media manager Abhisek “ciwrl” Devkota in a Reddit Ask Me Anything event shortly after making the announcement on the CyanogenMod blog. The team of 17, including Boost co-founder Kirt McMaster as CEO, are in Palo Alto, California and Seattle.

Kondik says Cyanogen mod is named after him. “I’m terrible with names, so I just slapped ‘mod’ onto the end of my handle and ran with it”, he explained in the incorporation announcement.

An early question raised in the Reddit event concerned profit-making: “Monetization isn’t an immediate concern and our investors […] feel the same”, said Dutta, adding “Creating disruption in a multibilion dollar market is enough to make any investor raise their eyebrow.” This means CyanogenMod would continue to be free. Follow questions asked if the company was planning to release their own model of android device. “We certainly couldn’t take on the monumental task of building/testing hardware [right now]. Hardware would be one of many potential very long term paths we could take”, said Dutta.

The firm’s first announced step is to improve the process of installing the software on owner’s devices, which Kondik described as “hideous”. A new installer app is planned to be released “in the coming weeks” on Google Play. The installer app will not require rooting the device, instead installing by simply clicking a button.

A further step, broadly described without any details, is a project with an unnamed original equipment manufacturer (OEM). “We have a least one OEM partnership in the works, there will be an announcement next week regarding our plans there”, said Kondik. The team mentioned OEM licensing several times during the Q&A session on Reddit.

In addition to these corporate steps, there were questions regarding the roadmap for development of the ROM, which already has improvements regarding privacy and security over the native android loader. With “plenty of things in the product pipeline already” Dutta lists additional security features, AirPlay mirroring, screen recording, and Voice+ as upcoming. The mood throughout the event was jovial, with humourous questions such as “can you guys PLEASE release a CM build for my toaster? I’m not sure what model it is, but it’s white and I got it at Savers.” Kondik promised “Ship it to me and I’ll duct tape a G1 running CM to it”. Dutta said his “10 of your favorite lines of source code” are “The ones that worked when they shouldn’t have.”

Sunday, the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks drafted Brisbane, Australia native nose tackle Jesse Williams in the fifth round of the NFL Draft. Going into the draft, there were some expectations by the Brisbane Times and other media outlets that Williams might be selected in the first round. Injuries, which resulted in Williams being unable to participate fully in the NFL Combine, likely were reasons why he was not selected higher.

Gridiron football is not the most popular football code in Australia, with rugby league, rugby union, soccer, and Australian rules football all being more popular participation sports. Williams’ youth sporting career reflected this, with Williams playing rugby union until he was 15 years old at which time he switched codes and joined the local gridiron team, the Bayside Ravens. A year later, his playing ability earned him a scholarship offer from the University of Hawaii. He could not meet the university’s academic standards so eventually he attended Western Arizona Community College instead. In 2011, he transferred to the University of Alabama and played for the Alabama Crimson Tide for two seasons. Both seasons, his Crimson Tide team won the national championship.

Williams’ selection is unique amongst Australians as most Australians who have played in the NFL have been kickers. He is also only the second Australian ever to be drafted in the NFL Draft.

Marijuana and same-sex marriage have been made legal in the state of Washington in the United States, a month after voters approved the ballot measures.

Recently married couples leaving Seattle City Hall are greeted by well-wishers on December 9, 2012, the first day of same-sex marriage in Washington state.

Possession of amounts as high as one ounce or 28.4 grams or marijuana will now be permitted for all Washington citizens aged at least 21. As the new law came into effect 0000 PST (0800 UTC) today, reggae music could be heard in the city of Seattle as a group of people appeared to celebrate the countdown.

Marijuana used for medical purposes has been legal in Washington for fourteen years.

Public consumption of marijuana will remain outlawed. Seattle city attorney Pete Holmes said “Initiative 502 uses the alcohol model”, adding: “If drinking in public is disallowed, so is smoking marijuana in public.”
