Tarja in Argentina

Finnish symphonic rocker Tarja Turunen has revealed that the working title for her new album is What Lies Beneath. The album follows on from 2007’s My Winter Storm.

“With My Winter Storm, I chose the name of the album in the early stages and that helped me to create the concept for the album. With the new album, I decided to do it the same way, so I searched for an inspiring title and all the songs are one way or another related to it,” Tarja explained.

My Winter Storm was Tarja’s first album after she left the Finnish symphonic power metal band Nightwish, which she fronted. On the day of the album’s release – November 14, 2007 – it was certified gold in Finland for sales in excess of 15,000 copies. On January 2, the album was rereleased in a 2-CD format with 32 tracks, including a guest appearence by Doro Pesch and an unreleased song recorded in China that features the Beijing Philharmonic and the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra.

Regarding her next effort, she said “In the last months I’ve been writing a lot of music for my new album. Songwriting is always an amazing learning experience, and it has been a pleasure to discuss music with different people.

“The album process is still going on and I have more songs that are in the working. It is sounding very promising. The songs are absolutely more mature, wild, and emotional and they sound more me, if I can say so.”

The album is tentatively scheduled for release in September, but Tarja has commented that this is not set in stone. “The biggest difference in preparing this new album is that I will be taking the time that I need until the songs are in a shape that I am happy with,” she said “No matter how long it takes. I want it to be perfect for me. No hurry; no pressure.”

Tarja Turunen, a Finnish symphonic rock artist best known for being the former frontwoman of symphonic power metal band Nightwish, has been scheduled to appear at the 25th anniversary concert of heavy metal vocalist Doro Pesch. Pesh, like Turunen, first gained fame fronting a band, in her case Warlock.

Doro and Tarja are now also confirmed to be planning to record duets with each other. Doro will feature on Tarja’s next solo album, while Tarja will sing a role in Doro’s upcoming 25th-anniversary album.

Tarja announced the planned duets at the same time as confirming her appearance at the December 13th concert in Düsseldorf, Germany’s ISS Dome, where she says she will perform “a new song and an old song”. At the same time, Norwegian symphonic metal band Leaves’ Eyes have also been confirmed for the event.

When making the announcements Tarja also said “there will be a co-operation between me and Doro in the future” although it was unclear if this refers to a more permanent arrangement or simply that which has been announced now.

Finnish symphonic rock/symphonic power metal soloist Tarja Turunen has played the first dates on her debut tour as a solo artist after losing her position as the lead vocalist for Nightwish.

The tour is in support of her new album My Winter Storm. Tarja has met with some early success as a solo artist, with the album certified gold in Finland – signifying sales in excess of 15,000 copies – and the first single I Walk Alone entering the German charts at number 16.

The first show of the tour was in Berlin, Germany. That was followed by a concert in Budapest, Hungary. She is to return to Germany tomorrow, to perform I Walk Alone at the final fight of German boxing champion Regina Halmich.

Said a statement by Turunen on the opening gig: “The first show in Berlin was just great!! Everybody in the band, including myself, was really nervous. It is normal that in the first show some things are not really working yet. We were ready to have a total catastrophe in the middle of the concert, but luckily it didn’t happen! I sensed that the audience was really listening everything carefully and I got the feeling that they enjoyed the show. That makes me very happy and delighted. There was a good spirit. It was funny to see the entire band, including two drum sets, in a small stage! But our crew managed to make us fit there… I am sure that things are getting better from now on. As for the first show, Berlin was amazing beginning for us. Thanks so much for all the nice and wonderful persons in the audience. I felt your support and love. You made a bit difficult for me to continue singing at some points during the concert. Just to bring down the myth that German people is cold[sic]. I think you were great and very, very warm.”

Solo American hard shock rock artist Alice Cooper has commented that The Osbournes, a reality TV show starring heavy metal vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, ruined the career of the Black Sabbath frontman.

Cooper said he felt that by allowing daily life in his house to be broadcast to the world, he destroyed the mystery that had previously surrounded him.

“Most fans thought he lived in a big, dark castle with skeletons in the cellar.” said Cooper.

“When that show aired they knew he was just some guy who potters around his Beverly Hills mansion.

“It was meant to be some kind of comedy but the audience was laughing at Ozzy, not with him. And as a close friend, that made me very sad.”

Meanwhile, both artists have related news this week. Finnish solo symphonic power metal soprano Tarja Turunen, most famous as the former Nightwish frontwoman, has released a 30-second preview of her cover version of Alice Cooper’s top ten hit Poison, which will feature on her upcoming album My Winter Storm.

Cooper himself has stated that during an upcoming tour he will replicate a mock hanging for the first time after a near-fatal accident performing the same stunt in 1988, only this time he will also be wearing a straightjacket.

Meanwhile, Ozzy has blamed illegal music downloads for poor sales of his latest album Black Rain, saying that the low sales have forced him into a 90-gig world tour that he has admitted he can barely cope with.
