A former Wikileaks employee has destroyed 3,500 unpublished leaks to Julian Assange’s site, and taken the site’s encrypted system to create a spinoff project.

Daniel Domscheit-Berg, Assange’s former right-hand man, left Wikileaks last year after a disagreement between the pair; and, has now demolished files sent to the Wikileaks site such as the US no-fly list, Bank of America documents and “detailed information about 20 neo-Nazi groups”.

Domscheit-Berg took the whistle-blower site’s submission system to create a rival-site, OpenLeaks, consequently Wikileaks will not be able to receive online leaked files, and will have to use “snail mail” from an Australian PO box.

In an interview with Der Spiegel, Domscheit-Berg said the unpublished documents had been shredded to protect their sources. In his book published this year, ‘Inside Wikileaks’, he revealed his motives for destroying the files and taking the encrypted system, writing, “children shouldn’t play with guns”. He stated the material would be returned to Assange “if and when he can prove that he can store the material securely and handle it carefully”.

Wikileaks retaliated, claiming the destroying of documents hindered the “leaking of many issues of public importance”, accusing Domsheit-Berg of theft and sabotage. Via twitter, Wikileaks gave several responses over the weekend, writing, “DDB spits on every courageous whistleblower who leaked data if they destroy the keys and refuse to return it”.

In a statement made by Wikileaks, Assange claims Domscheit-Berg was in contact with the FBI, and is assisting the US investigation into the site. Another statement from Wikileaks claims Domscheit-Berg has “repeatedly attempted to blackmail Wikileaks by threatening to make available, to forces that oppose Wikileaks, these private communications”.

On August 14, Wikileaks accused OpenLeaks of stealing its ideas. Domscheit-Berg aims to make the rival site a more transparent and democratic site than Wikileaks.

Poland issues EU warrant for Swede suspected of stealing Auschwitz sign

The sign has been replaced by a replica.

A court in Poland has issued a European Union arrest warrant for 34-year-old Anders Högström, the alleged mastermind involved in the theft of the infamous Arbeit Macht Frei sign from Auschwitz. The sign, later recovered cut into three pieces, was stolen from the entrance of the death camp in December last year. Five Poles have been arrested for the theft of the sign, that translates to “work sets you free”. The wrought-iron sign weighs 40kg and is five metres long, and was unscrewed and ripped from above the gate of the infamous site in the heart of Poland. The theft caused outrage around the world, in particular in Poland and Israel.

Spokesman for the court of the Polish city Krakow, Rafał Lisak, said that the Swedish national is suspected of “incitement to commit theft of a cultural treasure”. Höngström is the founder of a Swedish neo-Nazi group, National Socialist Front. However, he later quit the group and reeled against the extreme right-wing movement. The warrant issued for him obliges any European Union constituent country to arrest the suspect and return him to Poland for a trial.

Between 1940 and 1945, over one million Jews and other minority groups were killed in the gas chambers of, or died of starvation in, the three camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Local police reports say that 47 people were injured and 60 arrested in Hamburg, Germany, following violence between police and protestors over the past two days.

2,000 officers were deployed to help contain the riots. They deployed water cannons against the demonstrators, whose numbers were reported by different sources as 2,000 and 6,000. The demonstrators, protesting a rally held by about 100 members of the far-right National Democratic Party, had been throwing stones and other objects in the neighbourhood of Schanzenviertel. Several cars were set on fire and the demonstrators destroyed a bus stop.

Senior police official Peter Born said 28 police officers were wounded in the clashes.

Organized labor advocates worldwide held Friday demonstrations commemorating International Workers’ Day, May 1st. Increased unemployment and financial hardship consequent to the ongoing global financial crisis led to larger demonstrations than in 2008, but violent incidents in some world cities marred the day of celebration.

In Germany, 57 were arrested as young protestors threw bottles and set fire to cars in the capital, Berlin. Scattered violence also took place in Hamburg. 48 police and an unknown number of demonstrators are said to have been injured throughout the country, which is facing its deepest financial slump since the end of the Second World War. Trade unions in the country estimate that 484,000 people took part in the protests, some of which were deliberately violent; Class Struggle Bloc spokesman Marcus Berndt told the London Times, “The system is violent and now violence is being met by violence.” Meanwhile, 700 anarchists took part in an attempt to disrupt a neo-Nazi march through Berlin while the anti-immigrant National Democratic Party was preparing a demonstration that left police wary of further violence. Overall, though, German police characterized the events as “largely peaceful” compared to the 2008 demonstrations.

The eight major French trade unions joined forces for rallies in that country, with between 65,000 and 160,000 taking to the streets in Paris in mostly peaceful protests. France has faced continued popular unrest over the economic and labor policies of President Nicolas Sarkozy, but the half-million taking part in the May 1st demonstrations are few compared to the estimated three million who rallied against Sarkozy in March.

Industrial action by transport workers disrupted travel throughout Greece. Police used flash grenades and tear gas to disperse demonstrators in Athens. The violent encounters were between Greek police and 300 self-described anarchist university students in Athens; 6,000 had earlier marched peacefully, with no reported arrests, through the city.

Outside the European Union, record demonstrations also took place across Asia.

Marchers in Istanbul, Turkey, where the government has this year agreed to make May 1st a public holiday under pressure from increasingly-influential trade unions, were pushed onto side streets by water cannons before a pitched battle between them and demonstrators broke out, with the protestors pelting the police with missiles and police responding with tear gas. No serious injuries have been reported from the demonstrations in Istanbul, but a number of arrests have taken place.

Stability in Indonesia was on the line as 8,000 demonstrated in Jakarta for the Alliance for Workers Demands. The Alliance, which groups together 33 Indonesian labor organizations, and represented 700,000 people, said through a spokesman that if the government did not listen to their demands for reform of the Indonesian employment system, they would reject the results of the upcoming elections.

Demonstrators carry a banner saying “Long live May Day” in a rally in Mumbai in 2004.

A record 12,000 turned out in Taipei, Taiwan, largely organized by labor unions; the crowd booed Taiwanese labor minister Wang Ju-hsuan as he attempted to address them from atop a van. Taiwan faces a record 5.8% unemployment rate as the financial slowdown hurts the island’s export-driven economy.

Industrial action in India was highlighted by a one-day strike in the Malayalam film industry, which has undergone continuing wage disputes with management in the state of Kerala. A march against pay cuts and job losses were also staged in Delhi by the Indian Federation of Trade Unions

And 36,000 rallied in Tokyo for Japan’s 80th May Day celebration organized by the Trade Union Confederation.

Commander Jeff Schoep of the National Socialist Movement of the United States

The National Socialist Movement is, according to its website, the largest and most active Nazi party in the United States. Accordingly, it refers to itself as ‘America’s Nazi Party’ and aims to instigate major change in the US.

Wikinews was able to conduct an interview with the head of the party, Commander Jeff Schoep. Fresh back from a march in Missouri, Commander Schoep told Wikinews his views on Barack Obama, the economy and much more.

Read the full exclusive interview below:

Interview

Wikinews

Does your party believe America will be a better or worse place with Obama as President?

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png How will the National Socialist Movement react to the election of Barack Obama – will there be co-operation or will you be opposed to him?

Nazis at a recent rally in Jefferson, Missouri

  • Commander Schoep: Obongo is just another figurehead. He answers to International jewry just like McCain, it does not matter what color his skin is, he is more of the same old same old system that has crippled our Nation.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Obama says he wants to close Guantanamo Bay – what are your views on this?

  • Commander Schoep: Our Position on Guantanamo is that it is a National disgrace and should be shut down completely. The Prison was set up to torture and avoid U.S. laws of fair treatment of prisoners, it should be closed. Furthermore many Soldiers (P.O.W.’s) are being held there in violation of International P.O.W. laws, instead these soldiers are classified as enemy combatants or terrorists. For example the Taliban was the legitimate Government in Afghanistan, yet their soldiers are not classified as soldiers. It is a violation of the rules of warfare, and it is criminal. For those reasons the Prison should be closed and the soldiers returned to their homelands.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png There are fears Obama may be assassinated. What do you think that would mean for America and for your party?

  • Commander Schoep declined to answer this question.

An entrance to a camp at Guantanamo Bay. Schoep and Obama both want to see the facility closed down.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Why do you think Obama succeeded over McCain?

  • Commander Schoep: McCain is an out of touch fool who openly crusaded for his beloved 3rd World invaders, who did not vote for him anyways because he is white. The Republicans lost many votes not just due to McCain’s lack of charisma, but mainly because the common man is sick of the Republican lies and same old dog and pony show that was King George Bush. Voters see McCain as an extension of the policies that got us into the current economic mess/hardship in our Nation. Obama came across to the masses as someone who would change things. Whereas the voters believe he will change things and make America prosperous once again, I think his idea of change will likely be similar to the change Kwame Kilpatrick did for Detroit, Marion Barry did for DC, and Robert Mugabe did for Zimbabwe. Time will tell if he rules the land honestly, or if he attempts to further corrupt it, perhaps installing a communist like agenda to uplift the ghetto into the Suburbs. We will see…

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png If you were in power, how would you deal with the current financial situation?

  • Commander Schoep: We would institute a National Socialist Government. We would cut all foreign aid to Israel, and other unneeded foreign aid. Institute an America First Policy, pull back our troops from oversea’s Zionist organized wars, and put them on America’s borders to defend against illegal aliens. Halt the 3rd World invasion that is crippling our economy. We would abolish the Federal Reserve, and ban foreign influence from all aspects of our economy, and seats of Government.

This nuclear bomb had to be recovered after it was lost into the sea after a mid-air collision. Commander Schoep would like to see global nuclear disarmament to prevent situations like this or misuse of such weapons.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Do you feel responses so far, both in the US and internationally, by politicians to the financial crisis were adequate, or could more have been done?

  • Commander Schoep: More should be done, see above response. Most American Politicians are afraid to take an America first stand, and bow down to the Israelis instead. U.S. politicians need to throw off the shackles, and stand up for the common man NOW, before it’s to late. Only through an America First Policy will we regain prosperity and refuel our economy.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Do you think the economy will be sorted out in, say, four years time?

  • Commander Schoep: No, I think it will worsen. The Communist Party openly endorses and supports the new President, if that is a sign of things to come, look out White America. The Winds of Revolution may already be blowing.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Is there need for some international financial co-operation, or could America solve its own financial problems entirely on its own?

  • Commander Schoep: This would be an easy fix, bring all of our troops home from Overseas, cut off all Foreign aid (starting with Israel), institute an America First Policy across the boards, abolish the Federal Reserve, and remove all Foreign Nationals from any Govn’t or banking institutions. That would be a start, and we should concentrate solely on our own Nation.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png The US currently owes a large amount of debt. How would you go about paying this off and preventing the problem repeating itself?

  • Commander Schoep: Answer to this is above in the last question, institute those solutions and revive our economy, then we can pay back our debts.

Commander Schoep says the Tesla electric sports car is a good example of efforts to move to greener alternative fuels

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Oil will eventually run out. That may or may not be short-term, but what is clear is that the prices, although back down from the record highs, are set to rise. Would you commit to using alternative sources of fuel and energy to combat this, or have you another energy policy in mind?

  • Commander Schoep: We must look at alternative energy forms, many valiant efforts are being made, such as the Tesla electric sports car (can I get one of those for this endorsement, ha ha kidding), and hybrid cars are a step in the right direction. I would favour taking some of the Federal $$$ slated for Foreign Nations and wars to be redirected at finding alternate and greener energy sources, and earmark other funding for cancer research and programs to heal our own sick people here in the U.S.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png America recently revealed that they had lost a nuclear weapon off Greenland forty years ago. Many others have gone missing. Do you think nuclear weapons safety is adequate, does it need revamped, or should America commit to nuclear disarmament?

  • Commander Schoep: This is a tricky question, I think nuclear weapons are a bad thing, especially in the wrong hands, we know the Zionist terror State of Israel has nukes, and threatens the entire Middle East with those weapons. Due to the Israelis having them, now Iran wants them, and they have every right to pursue them for self defence against a hostile and unpredictable neighbor. In a perfect World I would say yes, all Nations should disarm them to insure that there are no accidents or madmen launching them at other Nations. The harm to the environment and mass human life is way too great to allow any Nuclear accidents. If there is a way to disarm all nations’ nuclear arsenals, then I am all for that, but until all Nations have disarmed and destroyed them, others will keep trying to build them for their own National integrety.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png What issues do you think the next US election will revolve around?

  • Commander Schoep: That remains to be seen. I am not a fortune teller, so I will reserve my speculation for coffee table talks.

Radical antifascist computer hackers, from an “international task force” Datenantifa (literally: data-antifa), claim that they have hacked the forum www.bloodandhonour.com. In a press release on the German indymedia page from August 29, 2008, they have provided links to roughly 800 MB of data, that are said to be a full mirror of the web forum with its 31,948 registered users. The German newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau has evaluated the files and states that 500 sets of data would belong to users from Germany. (Bild, a German tabloid, gives the number of 1200.) The Blood and Honour network is illegal in Germany, and this data, although obtained illegally and not usable in court, will very likely lead to criminal investigations.

In the press release the hackers said that “As a part of our struggle against the fascist movement we hacked the forum of: www.bloodandhonour.com!” They attribute their success to a cooperation with friendly groups “domestic and abroad,” and emphasize that the databases of the server were retrieved in “laboriously prepared cloak-and-dagger operation” that involved a “house search”.

Günther Hoffmann, from the Center for Democratic Culture commented that “some people in the far-right extremist scene are going to get very nervous, including activists from the NDP,” as a result of the incident. Katharina König from the Action Alliance against the Right in Jena said that there was now “evidence that Blood and Honour concerts continue to take place in Germany.” Furthermore the Datenantifa had secured so-called “red-watch-lists”, on which Neo-Nazis gather information on their political enemies.

2008 United States Presidential Election
Wikinews Election 2008.svg
2008 U.S. Presidential Election stories

While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.

As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. The most recent of our interviews is Laurens, South Carolina’s John Taylor Bowles. Mr. Bowles is running with the endorsement of the National Socialist Order of America, a Minnesota-based Neo-Nazi party created after a recent rift in the National Socialist Movement.

Interview[]

Why do you want to be President?

I am running as “The White People’s Candidate” for President of the USA in 2008 because I believe that America has changed for the worse because the once-dominate White European-American is being reduced to second-class citizen status and losing political power. Much of the present American Southwest is reverting to a Spanish speaking Mexican culture, with Puerto Ricans breeding faster than Blacks in New York City, and Cuban refugees still crowding into Florida it is possible that North America may soon look like South America. White Americans need to start voting as a bloc and not as individuals if they are to have an effective voice in government or America will turn into a third world country.

Have you ever run for political office before?

Yes, in 1984, I ran as a Baltimore City convention delegate to the Republican Party Convention. In 1983, I ran for the Baltimore City Republican Party Steering Committee and came in fourth out of five candidates.

Have you ever been a member of a political party, other than the one you’re currently in?

Yes, I was an official supporter of the National Socialist White People’s Party (currently known as the NEW ORDER) from 1974 through 2004. In 2004, I switched to the National Socialist Movement (NSM) and served as its National Election Director and held the rank of Captain until October 19, 2007, when the National Socialist Movement officially split because NSM Commander Jeff Schoep wasn’t supporting my candidacy and was sabotaging the election campaign, plus displaying bad character that was becoming known publicly. Honorable NSM members left and formed the National Socialist Order of America (nsoa88.com). I currently serve as the National Election Director for the National Socialist Order of America and its 2008 Presidential candidate as well.

Have you ever campaigned for another political candidate?

Yes, in 1975, I served as campaign manager and treasurer to Baltimore City Council candidate Wolfgang Schrodt. Mr. Schrodt was the first National Socialist (NAZI) candidate to win a primary election in the USA and enter an American general election. He lost the election but received 12% of the White vote.

What is your current job?

I am a retired federal officer of the United States Department of Agriculture.

What skills or ideas do you bring from this position, or previous positions, that will benefit the Oval Office?

As a former federal officer of the United States Department of Agriculture and United States Air Force, I know the inner-workings of the federal government in all areas and familiar with the enforcement of its laws and regulations. In addition, I was elected as a union representation of one of America’s largest unions: United Auto Workers, Local #1400. Being a union representative taught valuable skills regarding labor. Lastly, I have been a White political activist for over 34 years and raised a family and know the problems that the average White family must endure.

Obviously, the next American President and his or her administration will face many diverse issues. But if you were to narrow identify the three most important issues, what would they be? How will you address these issues?

1.) Illegal immigration.
The federal government must adopt a zero tolerance policy regarding any illegal immigrant and remove them from American soil immediately. Also, the illegal immigrants crossing the southern border is a military problem and the USA military should be patrolling it.
2.) Iraq War.
The federal government has lied to its citizens regarding the Iraq War and needs to pull all troops out of Iraq and help Iraq rebuild its infrastructure. As President, I would pull all military troops out of every foreign country and close every military base outside the USA to save taxpayers money and put them on the USA borders to guard and assist in natural disasters when they occur. The current President needs to be put on trial for constitutional violations and crimes against humanity.
3.) Health care.
The first step in medical reform and the medical insurance is giving American citizens who are workers and life-long taxpayers first preference in medical care and services. No taxpaying American person who suffers a costly, life-threatening illness in his/her family should face bankruptcy or loss of his home while even one illegal alien gets free medical care.

Campaigning for the American presidency is one of the most expensive exercises in the world. How do you deal with the cost and fundraising?

My campaign is financed by grassroots supporters throughout the USA. I won’t accept any corporation donations or any type of donation not allowed by the Federal Election Commission. My controversial politics draws donations from exposure on the Internet.

Do you have a running mate yet? Who are they? What are you/were you looking for in a running mate?

I had a Vice-Presidential candidate when the campaign officially began on December 7, 2006; but, unfortunately he was killed in a mysterious automobile accident 10 hours later. His name was William (Wild Bill) and he served in the USA military and was decorated with over 15 medals. Early in his political life, Mr. Hoff served as Grand Dragon for the Ku Klux Klan in New York and ran for the Senate in New York.
My second choice for Vice-President was Kris Johnson; but, he was pressured to drop out because the NSM Commander wanted to sabotage my campaign. I will announce my third vice-presidential running mate choice on my campaign website (Bowlesforpresident.com) probably in March 2008. My running mate will be, of course, a National Socialist.

Can you win the 2008 Presidential election? Can any third party or independent candidate ever win?

Anything is possible. In American politics, things can swing around in a second. I have always voted for a third party political candidate in every election. Third political parties can win; but, they need to have easier state ballot access laws. Currently, the USA has some of the strictest ballot access laws in the world.

If you can’t make it into the Oval Office, who would you prefer seeing taking the presidency?

One of the reasons I decided to run for President was to give White voters a choice. I don’t think any of the current mainstream party candidates are qualified. Both the Republican Party and Democratic Party are pro-Zionist and working against the best interests of White America.

What should the American people keep in mind, when heading to the polls this November?

White voters, in particular, should really think about who they are voting for to be their President in 2008. White voters have been transformed into a swarm of middle-class drones carefully being isolated and quarantined from the seats of decision-making and opinion molding. If White people lose control of America there will be no America. Only a National Socialist government can restore America and put it back on course as the White Founding Fathers wanted. Vote and support a National Socialist candidate for President in 2008. White people should not let their country get destroyed and taken from them without a fight!

A group of about 500 demonstrators protested the presence of David Irving, an English historian and convicted Holocaust denier, at a debate at Oxford University on Monday. The students broke into the Oxford Union building where the debate was being held and delayed the debate for over an hour.

British riot police were on the scene to maintain the peace. The demonstrators gathered in front of the building hours before the debate was to begin and later staged a sit-down protest in the building’s halls. Only half of the people who had tickets to the debate were able to enter the building due to the protests. David Irving and Nick Griffin, a leader of the far-right British National Party who also participated in the debate, were forced to be separated and placed in different rooms. One protester was reportedly injured after a blow to the head.

The Oxford Union building where the debate was held.

The topic of the debate was free speech. It was organized by the Oxford Union, who voted Friday to allow Irving to speak, amid controversy. The protest was organized by the activist group Unite Against Fascism, as well as members of the Oxford University Student Union and Oxford’s Jewish and Muslim societies.

Luke Tryl, president of the Oxford Union, defended the decision to allow Irving to speak, saying that the purpose of the debate was to discuss the limits of free speech, not to give the speakers a platform from which to endorse their views. Ned Temko, chief political correspondent of The Observer, disagreed, saying, “It’s not a question about giving them a platform, it’s about giving them credibility.”

From February to December 2006, David Irving was jailed in Austria after being convicted of identifying with the Nazi Party. He has written several books which deny the Holocaust and support the views of Adolf Hitler. In 1998, an English court found that he is “an active Holocaust denier; that he is anti-Semitic and racist and that he associates with right-wing extremists who promote neo-Nazism.” Nick Griffin is the National Chairman of the British National Party, a nationalist group known for its anti-immigration and anti-Muslim policies. In 1998, he was also convicted of denying the Holocaust.

Location of Belgium in Europe and the world.

A court in Flanders prolonged the custody of 12 suspects on Thursday. Meanwhile, more details emerge in the case against alleged neo-Nazi group inside the Belgian army. They are accused of terrorism, weapons traffic and racism.

Belgian soldiers loading a C-130.

Most lawyers involved asked for their clients to be released, and will appeal the court’s decision. One lawyer said the police was being influenced politically to make the arrests now, before the elections of October 8, and that his client was more of a “immature teenager and weapons freak”. The prosecutor is calling some suspects weapons dealers, but the defence lawyers claim they are weapons collectors, and say that terrorism is out of the question.

A spokesperson for the justice department denied this formally, saying that “The weapons traffic of the suspects began to take too large proportions, so we couldn’t wait any longer.” She also said the army informed them that they considered it too dangerous to take the soldiers involved along on uncoming international missions (Belgium is sending troups to Lebanon).

The prime suspect and alleged leader of the group is Thomas B. The police thinks he has a neo-Nazistic ideology and was planning attacks to destabilise Belgium. Thomas B. founded a splinter group of Blood and Honour called ‘Bloed, Bodem, Eer en Trouw’ (Eng: Blood, Soil, Honour and Fidelity), after the British headquarters of the skinhead organisation didn’t let him found an official branch in Belgium.

T.V. station VTM claimed the police tapped into phone conversations where Thomas B. was talking about killing Filip Dewinter and Dyab Abou Jahjah, two political leaders and opponents in Belgium. That way, both sides would cause an uprise and they could seize the opportunity. But the prosecutor’s office has formally denied the existence of specific plans to this end.

The police has discovered numerous weapons, and a video showing a paramilitary training, not only on military grounds but also under a bridge in the city Dendermonde. The police say the tape shows how they fire guns and throw Molotov cocktails on that location.

In the political arena, Internal Affairs minister Patrick Dewael has suggested a law to forbid far right criminal organisations. The plan was applauded by some and contested by others. Earlier on Friday, the federal government supported the proposal to give more power to the national intelligence services to fight terrorism. Minister of Defence André Flahaut suspended 11 suspects inside the army. Prime minister Guy Verhofstadt said the entire affair was “a blame for the country and the army”.

“No Lebs” handwritten on t-shirt

Cronulla Beach in Sydney, New South Wales was the scene of racist mob-violence yesterday. In what has been described as disgusting, un-Australian and shameful behaviour, participants in a 5000-strong mob assaulted people suspected of being of Lebanese origin. The angry, alcohol-fuelled crowd also turned on anyone who tried to help the victims, including police, security guards and ambulance officers.

Following an attack on two lifeguards earlier in the week, allegedly by men of Lebanese descent, a protest had been organised via text messages and a small number of usenet postings.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber says inflammatory text messages calling for revenge attacks fueled the violence. Mr Schreiber said the heavily-circulated messages ensured troublemakers went to the southern Sydney beach looking for a fight. Police had patrolled the area all weekend after text messages began circulating among the community calling for vigilante responses to unwelcome visitors on the beach.

“The sending out of that text message was foolish and irresponsible and ensured that people from all over Sydney came to Cronulla looking to cause trouble and this was further fueled by alcohol,” said Mr Schreiber.

Sydney’s popular talk-back radio station 2GB also promoted Sunday’s event. Breakfast announcer Alan Jones has been accused of “fanning the flames.” Callers who recommended vigilante action were not discouraged to take the law into their own hands. Mr Jones, notorious for inflammatory comments, repeated the text message for Cronulla residents to defend their territory several times.

As the crowd marched along the beach and foreshore area, waving Australian flags, the crowd chanted racist slogans, with many wearing clothes bearing racist sentiment.

Middle Eastern men were openly targeted and assaulted. A young Muslim woman wearing a veil was chased into a kiosk on Cronulla beach. Police tried to move her away from the chanting crowd but were unable to reach the security of the command post. While the woman and police officers hid in the kiosk, a crowd surrounded the kiosk and shouted “Kill the Lebs”, while others climbed on top of the kiosk.

As police horses and special operations officers formed a line and pushed the crowd away, they were bombarded with beer bottles. After half an hour, an ambulance arrived at the kiosk and people were loaded into it. The ambulance, transporting six injured youths, escorted by police and police horses, was also bombarded with beer bottles. One struck an ambulance officer on the head. His colleague suffered lacerations to the arm.

Arrests

A total of 25 people, including two ambulance officers, were injured and about 40 cars were vandalised at Maroubra as the unrest spread to other beachside communities. Police said 16 people had been arrested and charged with 41 offences. Locals said today they were in shock and many refused to be named, too scared of retribution for their comments.

Those charged were from Mortdale, Cronulla, Bondi Junction, Kareela, Granville, Lugarno, Greenacre, Mascot, Northmead, Jannali, Sutherland, and Riverwood. Offences included malicious damage, resist police, hinder police, assault police, resist arrest, possess prohibited drug, offensive manner, threaten violence, affray, possess knife in a public place, and driving in a manner dangerous. All of those charged were men between 17 and 40 years of age.

Government response

A Police strike force had been established to track down those responsible, NSW Premier Morris Iemma said today. Mr Iemma said video and photo evidence would be used to catch the offenders following incidents which he said showed “ugly face of racism in Australia”.

He said the Government would examine what extra police powers would be needed to combat further outbreaks of violence. A meeting of community leaders would be convened to discuss the problem.

“Let’s be very clear, the police will be unrelenting in their fight against these thugs and hooligans,” the Premier said. A series of apparent revenge attacks – including two stabbings – occurred overnight following the unrest at Cronulla.

Prime Minister John Howard, at a separate press conference, condemned the violence. He said attacking anyone on the basis of their race or ethnicity was unacceptable and should be repudiated. He has refused to call Australians “racist”. He himself created racism-related controversy when in 1988 he claimed that the rate of Asian immigration into Australia was too high.

Response from Islamic leaders

Kuranda Seyit, the director of Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR), an Islamic think-tank, was disgusted by the weekends violence. “The Cronulla police must send a loud and clear message to others who are potentially considering vigilante action against fellow Australians,” Mr Seyit said. He also condemned the previous violence that was allegedly committed by Lebanese men, but said that this does not justify yesterdays violence. “I realise that the initial behaviour by the thugs who beat the lifeguard was unacceptable but to take it out any anyone who the mob think are not one of them, is not the solution,” Mr Seyit said.

He suggested that a number of people in Sutherland Shire were racist, and this contributed to the violence. “Obviously the underlying racism and intolerance in the shire is now bubbling to the surface.”

Participation of “Neo-Nazis”

NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione says police believed neo-Nazi and white nationalist groups were among the crowd. “That in fact is something that we’re following up,” he told the Nine network.

Skinheads wearing boots, braces and neo-Nazi emblems were among the protestors. Three far-right organisations: “Australia First Party”, “Patriotic Youth League (PYL) and the Newcastle-based “Blood and Honour” – all handed out pamphlets. PYL describes itself as a “radical nationalist” group with links to the German-based skinhead group Volksfront, British Nationalist Party and the New Zealand National Front.

Australia First’s Dr Jim Saleam, who was jailed for 3 1/2 years in 1991 for possessing a firearm and organising a shotgun attack on the home of the African National Congress’s Australian representative, said: “I wouldn’t condone it, but I wouldn’t condemn it,” Dr Saleam said his members had recruited up to 120 people for the rally but denied they were involved in violence.

Anti-race hate campaigner Matt Henderson-Hau, who runs the Fightdemback.org website, claims only one skinhead at the rally came from within the Sutherland Shire. “The rest came from the Central Coast, Newcastle and other parts of Sydney,” he said. Mr Henderson-Hau said neo-Nazis had manipulated the crowd at Cronulla. “If you remove the Nazis from the equation, you will go a long way to dousing the flames and hopefully some cool heads will emerge on both sides,” he said.

White Nationalist website, Stormfront Downunder, yesterday featured messages from people in the US, Britain and Canada supporting the Cronulla attacks.

Reaction from Sydney bloggers

Most bloggers were in agreement that anyone committing acts of violence should be arrested and punished, regardless of race, place of residence, or justification for their actions. Some are purely critical, whereas others are pointing to previous acts by Lebanese youths to explain the violence.

“Round ‘em up—all of them, from both sides—charge ‘em, convict ‘em, jail ‘em,” Tim Blair said.

“Are we living in Tsarist Russia where peasants with pitchforks chase Jews down the street?” said Jason Soon of catallaxy. He made a distinction between these riots and previous riots, such as Maquarie Fields. “The denizens of Cronulla do not even have the excuse of poverty and deprivation for their actions. The infamy of disgrace will be heavier on them than on the people of Macquarie Fields.”

One blogger said that he did not support Sunday’s violence, but argued that it was understandable after what he described as years of violence and intimidation by Lebanese youths.

“This episode is an absolute disgrace. I, however, absolutely refuse to condemn the people who took that action yesterday, especially given the pattern of wilful inaction from the authorities over the last two years. Far from demonstrating intolerance (arguably, quite the opposite has been demonstrated here, given the facts), put quite simply, everybody has a limit,” said James Ozark of “A Western Heart”.

Another blogger, who goes by the name “AnonymousLefty”, issued a challenge to right-wing bloggers and mainstream pundits, asking them to explain how recent events should have been handled. “What precisely should we be doing differently in order to prevent flare-ups like Cronulla? (If Andrew Bolt and Piers Ackerman are going to devote their next columns to Cronulla – and I’d bet you the shiny biro on my desk that they will – perhaps they’d consider, instead of simply attacking ‘multiculturalism’ as a vague concept, actually suggesting what they’d do differently.)”

Splat Guy criticised the use of the national flag and anthem during the riot. “… the ugliest thing of all was the use of symbols of the unity of Australians – all Australians, not just Anglos – like the flag, national anthem, and sports cries as a sort of racial identifier. Really unsavoury, really unacceptable, really unaustralian.”

Historical background: The White Australian Policy

Racism in post-invasion Australia dates back to the White Australia policy, which started as government policy in the 1880s, became a national law with the creation of Australia as a state in 1901, effectively was stopped in 1973 under the prime ministership of Whitlam, and was completed by further reform in immigration law under Fraser in 1978.
