A masked man killed a teacher and an 11 year old student in a sword attack at a school in Trollhättan, Sweden yesterday, before police who arrived at the scene fatally shot him.

The teacher died on the scene, while the student was sent to a hospital before he died.

In addition, three others have been injured in the sword attacks. The injured, who are hovering “between life and death” according to Doctor Lars Spetz, have been sent to the Norra Älvsborgs Länssjukhus hospital for treatment.

“It is a black day for Sweden,” Stefan Löfven, Prime Minister of Sweden, who later visited the school, said in response to the attack.

Bo Johansson, head of the Swedish Teachers’ Union, expressed concern that schools are too open. Johansson said that schools should not be so open that “anyone can walk in,” even though “of course schools should be open to society.”

The school in question, Kronan, had a high immigrant population, The Guardian reported. Expo, a non-profit anti-racist organization which publishes the Expo magazine, said online that authorities are “investigating a possible political motive,” citing unspecified sources. Expo adds that the attacker may have held racist views, stating that he had shown “clear sympathies for extreme right-wing and anti-immigrant movements,” and that the attacker has “‘liked’ videos glorifying Nazi Germany” on the online video sharing site YouTube.

The man, dressed like the Star Wars character Darth Vader, posed for a photo with students, who believed that he was pulling an early Halloween prank, before he started attacking others with a sword. A student who attends the school said that fellow students “initially thought it was a joke.” The photo showed the man holding a sword and wearing a helmet.

Wikinews visited ‘Doc Wilkes House of Horrors’ located in Longview, Texas recently for a private tour. Co-owner Laura Wilkes led the tour and introduced a select number of actors featured in the haunt.

The attraction offers a broad array of elaborate sets and rooms, professionally designed to scare attendees. A broad host of costumed actors finish out the horror-related theme for customers.

Wilkes said the attraction’s physical design is meant to, “…play on peoples’ natural fears–the dark, narrow passageways, those types of things.”

Attendees are greeted by the presence of an antique hearse near the main entrance and the queue area is designed to present a spooky atmosphere with an array or arcane relics.

The haunt’s namesake and co-owner, Eugene ‘Doc’ Wilkes is heavily involved in the attraction’s operations. Wilkes has a lengthy performing history, having been a magician and western style actor for many years.

The cast of ghouls includes a human doll, several creepy clowns and other scary attractions. Elaborate lighting and sound effects also heighten the sensory experience.

The haunt is open Friday and Saturday evenings through October, with one Thursday special ‘Blackout Night’ planned for October 22. This year marks the attraction’s 13th consecutive year of operation.

Just days away from Halloween, Wikinews interviewed Kristian Hanson, producer-director of independent slasher film Sledge. The film has been a recent source of discussion in horror fan circles, primarily due to its production budget of only US$800. Sledge is Hanson’s fourth film to direct, according to Internet Movie Database.

Interview

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png How did you come up with the idea for Sledge?

Kristian Hanson: Sledge came to me while driving home from my brother’s wedding with my wife. She told me that I know slashers better than most and I could come up with something fun and unique, and that is exactly what I did with Adam Lynch and the film Sledge.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.pngWhat kind of pre-production work did the film require?

KH: Pre-Production involved John putting in some ads in the local newspaper and seeing if anyone would be interested in auditioning for the film. Planning the death scenes and figuring out what we could do without a budget and without anyone skilled in the ways of Special Effects.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.pngHow did you set up auditions? How many days did you spend auditioning people?

KH: Auditions were held a month before filming and that is where Stephanie Tupper came to be involved with the film. Everyone else was a friend of John’s and Dustin (Alex in the film) showed up by reading about the movie in the local Potsdam Newspaper. Without him, Sledge wouldn’t be what it is today.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png How many days went into filming?

KH: Four days went in to filming all of the Adam Lynch and camp site stuff. The Amish Paradise trailer and also the Couch girl [character] segments were also a different day, so a total of six. I could say that [the] Assly [character] was an extra day, but I literally threw up my green screen and hit record on both the intro and outro, so an extra five minutes doesn’t count in my eyes.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png You’ve said elsewhere that the production budget was about $800. What were some of the items/services that required buying/payment?

KH: The foam prop Sledge hammer, fake intestines, fake knives, [character] Adam Lynch’s clothes, teeth, contact lenses, the latex for the mask and creating the blood is where all of the money went to. Also buying hot dogs, hamburgers for the small crew. Again we didn’t have a set budget, this was kind of us just throwing our money out there to make this movie happen. We didn’t have a sheet with expenses etc.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png What else have you directed? (…and what about your co-director??)

KH: John and I both co-directed the film we made back in April 2012 (a few months before Sledge) titled F4L:Friends 4 Life, but that film has not been released and to be honest, I doubt it ever will be. It was a learning experience for us and has a lot of humor, but not knowing about copyrights etc, I doubt we would ever be able to release it. I would love to remake it in the future though where I could build up the original ending and keep the same script.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png How old are you?

KH: I am a whopping 30 years old.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Did you study film in college or have any other formal film-related education?

KH: When I was in college I took a semester of improv classes but I never went to school for film, and neither has John. He is the camera man and director of photography and is all self taught. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and will have a Master’s Degree in Global Terrorism this upcoming March. So when it comes to film, nope, I am self taught in regards to writing and directing.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.pngWho made the mask? [worn by the killer]

KH: My friend Monster Matt Patterson made the mask. I emailed him after writing the Sledge script and told him the basic idea and he just ran with it. He did an amazing job.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Did you do any location scouting before shooting?

KH: John and Russ (Nash in the film) went around [scouting] but to be honest, Russ’s dad owned the land where we filmed 90% of the movie. Adam’s ‘Stabbin Cabin’ [belongs to] a friend of John’s and that is where we ended up filming that area. We had the entire film figured out before we went to shoot thanks to the people that were there to allow us to use their land.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Did the movie appear in any large-scale venues (cinemas, festivals etc.)?

KH: The film played at the Twisted Tails Film Festival in Dallas, Texas, The Action on Film Festival in Monrovia, California, along with the Indie Fest where it won an Award for Merit in film making. We also had a screening in Los Angeles for fans where we had two-hundred people turn up back in June of 2013, which was surprising and just plain awesome.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png How many days did you spend editing?

KH: Editing took a long time. John spent night after night in his basement cutting and editing Sledge. It took three to four months […] I believe, and thankfully Eric Xton of ScarCrow and God in the Machine allowed us to use his music throughout Sledge. Without that music, the film would not be what it is today, so a huge thank you to them.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png Is the movie available via VOD ?

KH: Yes, Sledge is available on iTunes, Google Play, Playstation Network, Xbox Network and a bunch of other VOD providers, but I do not have a solid list [apart] from the main ones I named.

Wikinews waves Left.pngWNWikinews waves Right.png What’s in store for the sequel??

KH: In the sequel the movie jumps off where the last one ended but two weeks later. We make fun of the fact that this is a small town and in horror films it seems like everyone is a super-model or extremely super good looking. Adam Lynch has a lot more fun and a lot more deaths are planned that we intend to show this time. SledgeD will be just as fun as the first, with another group of people sitting down to watch Assly and another funny trailer for a made-up movie. All in all, it will be a lot of fun, with plenty of blood, horrible jokes and Sledging to go around.

With Halloween approaching, numerous haunted attractions all over Texas are preparing for the big “haunt” season. Directors and staff of such attractions must invest significant time preparing their buildings; such efforts gear up significantly during September. Wikinews caught up with some owners of these attractions to learn more about the hard work it takes to prepare for opening night.

Terror Nights, an attraction in Tyler, opens for the season on September 27. Ryan Laepple, owner and director of the haunt, states he’s currently involved in “a blur of safety inspections, auditions, actor training, and last but not least event advertising.” Laepple went on to say he stays “pretty busy until the show opens on the 27th and then things calm down some. As long as not too many things in the haunt break at once.” Dean Jarnig, the director of Zombie Manor in Arlington, said he and staff have recently been spraying flame-retardant chemicals and installing new lights. Jarnig also stated he and staff are working on a promotional video for their attraction, which opens on Friday September 13.

Hangman’s House of Horrors in Fort Worth is celebrating both its twenty fifth anniversary and final operational year. Some individuals who act in these attractions refer to their fellow actors as extended family. This year, some sources have even encouraged holiday job seekers to consider working at a haunted attraction to earn money. One whimsically listed the job’s benefits as “[…] free uniforms, a complimentary hair and makeup consultation and make-over, inspirational background music, plenty of on-the-job exercise opportunities and more.” Long a staple in American culture, “Haunted Houses“, as they’re commonly called, range in size from small garage-sized projects, up to multi floor buildings outfitted with the most elaborate of lighting and special effects.

A man in Greater Manchester, in the northwest of England, has been charged with possession of class A drugs after children were allegedly given cocaine whilst trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Children trick-or-treating on Mendip Close in the town of Royton were reportedly given bags containing a white powder. The incident was reported to Greater Manchester Police at approximately 1945 UTC Wednesday when children discovered the substance amongst their sweets collections. Police recovered two snap bags and later confirmed the powder was the class A drug cocaine.

23-year-old Donald Junior Green, who lives on Mendip Close, was charged with possession of class A drugs and is due to appear before Oldham Magistrates’ Court today. A 21-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of the same type of offence has been released without charge.

“The parents and police acted quickly when this report was made, in the interests of public safety,” said Superintendent Catherine Hankinson. She added: “We understand this to be an isolated incident.”

Gardner, 30, was celebrating Halloween when he was attacked

A man was beaten to death in London after he attempted to retrieve a Halloween hat that had been stolen from his girlfriend. Ben Gardner was on a night out with his girlfriend to celebrate Halloween when his girlfriend’s witch’s hat was stolen and spat in by a gang of people.

When Gardner tried to get the hat back he was repeatedly punched and kicked by a group of people who appeared to be both men and women. The attack happened at 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. His girlfriend was also punched during the attack.

Gardner died in hospital on Sunday evening after the attack in Sutton, in the south of London. Detective Inspector Bob Campany released a statement saying “This appears to be a violent unprovoked attack on an innocent man who was out enjoying Halloween night with his girlfriend.”

Five men and two women are being questioned by police. Another man has been questioned but released with no further action being taken.

Researchers say that two men claiming to be ‘Bigfoot’ hunters in Georgia in the United States and who claimed to have found the remains of the mythical creature earlier this month, are part of an elaborate hoax.

Bigfoot hunters Matt Whitton and Rick Dyer stated on August 15, 2008 that they were hunting for the creature in the forests of northeastern Georgia when they came across the supposed corpse of one of the legendary cryptids. After finding the body, they claimed to have taken it home where they stored it in a freezer.

A group called Searching For Bigfoot Inc. stated that they paid the hunters “an undisclosed sum” of money for all publicity related to the alleged carcass, but when researchers Tom Biscardi and Robert Schmalzbach went to examine the remains of the thawing body, they began to discover that it was nothing more than a plastic Halloween costume.

“[Within the first hour of thawing] a break appeared up near the feet area. … I observed the foot which looked unnatural, reached in and confirmed it was a rubber foot,” said one of the researchers for Searching For Bigfoot Inc., Steve Kull, who also examined the alleged corpse.

The researchers then attempted to reclaim their money and went to the hotel Whitton and Dyer were staying in, only to find the rooms empty, and the two men nowhere to be found.

“[We are a] victim of this series of deceptions,” added Kell who also said the group is “seeking justice”.

Whitton and Dyer claimed they had photos, video and DNA evidence to support their claim, but only one photo portraying a blurred black figure in the distance in the forest was provided.

The TimesOnline reports that the joke fell flat with Jeffrey Turner, who as Chief of Police in Clayton County, Georgia, put Mr Whitton on medical leave when he was shot in the wrist as he tried to foil a robbery earlier this summer. “As soon as we saw it was a hoax, I filed the paperwork to terminate his employment,” said Chief Turner. “He’s disgraced himself, he’s an embarrassment to the Clayton County Police Department, his credibility and integrity as an officer is gone, and I have no use for him,” he declared.

Schools in Moscow, Russia have been told by the city’s department of education to not allow any Halloween-related events.

Alexander Gavrilov, press secretary of the education department, told Interfax, “The department’s stance has remained invariable since 2003, when the leadership of the department sent a letter to Moscow principals, which bans holding Halloween events at their schools.”

Gavrilov further said that the ban is because this holiday “includes religious elements, including the cult of death, the mockery of death, personification of death and evil, which contradict the secular nature of state educational institutions.”

“This is destructive for the minds and the spiritual and moral health of pupils,” he said. “It’s not an attempt to block the celebration of this holiday completely, just in schools and colleges.”

Location of Jacksonville, Florida.

A Florida homeowner Ronald Langley, currently faces surgery in an effort to save his eye after being shot in the face by masked assailants.

Around 9 p.m on Halloween night the Jacksonville resident answered a knock on his door carrying with him (as is traditional) a bowl of candy. Instead of finding trick-or-treaters, the 67-year-old found three camouflage-wearing masked men, one of the three shot him in the face, hitting the homeowner above the eye. Langley was transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida.

“This is a very nice neighborhood the neighbors are very close,” said Pat Weyer, a neighbor. “It’s just a very strange happening.” “He had surgery last night and they may do more,” Weyer said. “He definitely will lose the sight in his eye, but they are trying to save the eye itself.”

“Outside of Halloween night, that would have aroused suspicion. But they blended very well in the crowd of people,” said the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ken Jefferson. “A person should not have to open his door and get shot when you’ve got legitimate reasons to open your door at night.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

Thursday, October 5, 2006 Large amounts of rain and hot days mainly in New England and the Midwest this summer could be to blame for a mold which causes pumpkins to rot and farmers say that there could be a shortage of the jack-o-lanterns on porches in the United States this Halloween.

According to Purdue University Extension plant pathologist, Daniel Egel, at least 2 types of fungi are causing spots of mold to develop on areas of the pumpkin, causing them to cave in and decompose from the inside.

“We really didn’t know until we went out and started picking around the 17th of September. It’s as if they’re rotting from the inside out,” said Kent’s Cucurbits in Indiana co-owner, Nina Kent.

Meigs Farm located in Lafayette, Indiana, which is operated by Perdue University, has been hit by the mold. Plant disease diagnostician, Karen Rane handled a pumpkin which she attempted to turn over onto an opposite which collapsed.

“It’s sporadic across the state,” said Rane.

Some farmer’s markets are reporting only a 40% yield in some cases.

“My grower told me he’s only getting about a 40 percent yield. It’ll be bad for anybody that doesn’t get one by about the 15th of October,” said a produce worker who works at D&R Market located in Lafayette, Tad Ritchie.

People who are looking to buy pumpkins are told to pick pumpkins with the longer greener stems. A bright orange color is also a good indicator of a healthy pumpkin.
