Totti joined Roma’s youth team in 1989 when he was 12 years old and made his Serie A debut aged 16 in March 1993 against Brescia Calcio. In the following year, he scored his first goal, against Foggia Calcio. To date, Totti has made 731 appearances and scored 304 goals – these are the club’s all-time records.

Totti has played 601 matches in Serie A and he is the third most-capped player in the league’s history. The record is held by Paolo Maldini who played 647 matches for A.C. Milan, a total that Totti cannot reach with this one-year extension.

In 1998, Totti became the youngest captain in the history of the league. Since then, Totti has won one Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana each on two occasions, and the FIFA World Cup in 2006. He was also awarded the European Golden Boot in 2007.

After the signing, Totti said, “I really wanted this contract, it represents the realisation of my dream, I always wanted to end my career having only worn one shirt – the Roma one”((it)).

Club president Jim Pallotta said “It’s quite fitting that on the anniversary of the day AS Roma was founded, Francesco Totti has signed a new playing contract […] He’s earnt this contract and now we want Francesco’s final season on the pitch to be the start of a new era of success for AS Roma.”((it))
