On Monday, German football club FC Bayern Munich completed the signing of Mats Hummels, who captained Bayern’s rivals Borussia Dortmund this past season. 27-year-old defender Hummels, who was an academy player at Bayern before moving to play for Borussia Dortmund, agreed to a five-year deal.

Hummels underwent medical tests on Monday before signing the contract. Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said “We’re delighted to welcome Mats back to FC Bayern, […] Not only are we strengthening our squad with a world-class centre-back, but also with a player who accepts responsibility and who is our own youth product. First of all we wish him a successful Euro 2016.”((de))

Hummels joined the Bavarians in 1995 when he was six years old. He played only one Bundesliga match for the Reds before he was loaned to Dortmund and later signed for them. He played his last game for Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in the DFB-Pokal Cup final, which Bayern won 4–3 on penalties.

After the signing was completed, he said “Saying goodbye to Dortmund was difficult for me of course. It was similar to 2008, when it was the other way around […] Now I’m looking forward to everything that awaits me at FC Bayern. I’m very excited.”((de))

In a deal announced yesterday, German association football defender Mats Hummels, the current captain of Borussia Dortmund (BVB), agreed to sign a five-year contract with his boyhood club — and arch rivals of Dortmund — Bayern Munich next season. The arrangement was conditional on Hummels undergoing medical tests before signing.

Hummels previously spent twelve years with the Bavarians, Bayern Munich, coming from their youth system. He moved to Dortmund in 2007 after appearing that year in one Bundesliga match for Bayern.

With BVB, center back Hummels won two Bundesliga titles, one DFB-Pokal Cup in 2012 when they won the domestic double under Jürgen Klopp; and a silver medal in the 2013 UEFA Champions League. He also won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

“Mats is one of the best centre-backs in the world”, said Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of FC Bayern München AG. “With him we will increase the quality in our team even further.” Dortmund’s CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said Hummels had “always been open and fair towards” them.

Hummels is to join Bayern side on July 1 — one year before his pre-existing contract expires with BVB. Dortmund’s website quoted Hummels saying “the decision was not easy for me after eight and a half successful years with BVB. I have always been proud and am still proud to wear the BVB jersey and to be part of this extraordinary team.”

Dortmund is to face Bayern Munich in DFB-Pokal Cup this month. After joining Bayern, Hummels would share the dressing room with his former Dortmund teammates Robert Lewandowski and Mario Götze.

Today, Spanish football club Atlético Madrid progressed to the UEFA Champions League Final after defeating German giants Bayern Munich 2–2 on aggregate in the second leg of their semi-final clash at the Allianz Arena. Atlético won the reverse fixture at the Vicente Calderón 1–0 on April 27 through a sublime individual goal from Saúl Ñíguez.

Rojiblancos conceded a goal in the 31st minute after the ball deflected off José María Giménez from a Xabi Alonso‘s free kick. Soon afterwards Giménez was yellow carded for impeding Javi Martínez in the box, resulting in a penalty. Thomas Müller stepped up but Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak managed to keep it out. Early in the second half, Frenchman Antoine Griezmann scored a crucial away goal. Bayern took the lead in the 71st minute through Robert Lewandowski finishing off a move from close range after Arturo Vidal‘s initial header. Bayern’s Martínez then fouled Fernando Torres, giving away a penalty which was saved by Neuer. Bayern kept their pressure up on Atlético until the final whistle as they looked for another goal to take the game to extra time, but it wasn’t to be for Pep Guardiola as his side were eliminated by Spanish opposition for the third consecutive season.

Atlético made the most of their inferior 33% possession and fewer shots on goal to confirm their place in the Champions League Final for the second time in three seasons. Diego Simeone‘s squad will face the winner between Real Madrid and Manchester City on May 28 at the San Siro in Milan, Italy in the UEFA Champions League Final.

Manchester-based football club Manchester City today announced their current manager Manuel Pellegrini will remain only to this season’s end. Former FC Barcelona and current Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola is to replace the Chilean next season.

Cquote1.svg He is one of the best managers in the world, no doubt about this. Cquote2.svg

Pellegrini joined City in 2013 and under him they have won the Premier League and the League Cup. Guardiola, winner of two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup with the German giants Munich, and a two-time Champions League winner with Barcelona, has signed a three-year contract with Manchester City. Guardiola also won four La Liga titles with Barcelona, winning fourteen trophies with them in total in four years and making him their most successful manager. He has suffered just nineteen managerial defeats in 239 league matches.

Pellegrini has managed 64 victories out of 99 games in the Premier League — only José Mourinho has a better record from his first 99 Premier League matches. Manchester City are currently second in the league table and in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Pellegrini was, the announcement noted, in full support of announcing the change.

Former Manchester City player Trevor Sinclair, in remarks to BBC Radio, said “He’s the hottest manager out there. Every club would want him.” Liverpool F.C. manager Jürgen Klopp, who previously coached Munich rivals Borussia Dortmund, praised Guardiola saying “He is one of the best managers in the world, no doubt about this. […] Pep won everything in Spain, nearly everything in Germany, so I think he wants to win everything in England, that is clear.”

On December 20, Bayern Munich announced Guardiola would be replaced by former Real Madrid and Chelsea F.C. manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian has won three Champions League titles in his coaching career.
