On Saturday night, in Taining distrinct, Fujian Province, China, an avalanche of about 100,000 cubic meters hit the construction site of a hydraulic power station. Initial reports said 34 people were missing, but over the following hours local authorities increased this figure to 41 people missing.

This event occurred after heavy rains recorded the previous day in that area. The country’s president, Xi Jinping, asked local authorities to increase their efforts to establish the whereabouts of missing persons.

This slippage also reportedly injured seven people. Xinhua also said the rescue effort and search for possible survivors has involved more than 400 rescuers.

On Saturday night, in Taining distrinct, Fujian Province, China, an avalanche of about 100,000 m3 hit a construction site for a hydraulic power station. Initial reports said 34 people were missing, but over the following hours local authorities increased this figure to 41 people missing.

This event occurred after heavy rains recorded the previous day in that area. The country’s president, Xi Jinping, asked local authorities to increase their efforts to establish the whereabouts of missing persons.

This slippage also reportedly injured seven people. Xinhua also said the rescue effort and search for possible survivors has involved more than 400 rescuers. Several media have released images of this landslide, the images show various structural remains (walls, roofs, etc.) that were floating near the banks of the hills that were affected by the rains river.

Earlier in December 2015 in Shenzhen City, a landslide left a toll of 77 people missing. The Government had indicated at the time that the disaster was due to security failures.

During trading on Friday, the Ethics Committee of FIFA sanctioned the former president of the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) and former vice president of CONMEBOL, Sergio Jadue, with a lifetime ban from participating in any activity that is bound with football.

From December 4, Sergio Jadue was investigated for having participated in a FIFA corruption and fraud scandal. The former helmsman decided to admit to these crimes.

This Friday, FIFA through a communiqué upheld the life ban for Jadue and cited violation of Articles 13, rules of behavior; 15, disloyalty; 18, duty to cooperate; 19, conflict of interest; and 21, bribery and corruption, of the FIFA code of ethics.

This sanction also fell on former member of the executive committee of FIFA, former president of CONMEBOL, and former president of the Colombian Football Federation, Luis Bedoya, who along with Jadue was also investigated for corruption and fraud, in addition to crimes of illicit association with the aim of committing crimes.

Today, the Ethics Committee of FIFA (the International Federation of Association Football) sanctioned the former president of the Chilean Football Association (ANFP) and former vice president of CONMEBOL (the South American Football Confederation), Sergio Jadue, with a lifetime ban from participating in any activity to do with football.

From December 4, Sergio Jadue was investigated for having participated in a FIFA corruption and fraud scandal. He admitted his involvement.

FIFA in its statement today upheld the life ban for Jadue and cited violation of FIFA code of ethics Articles 13, rules of behavior; 15, disloyalty; 18, duty to cooperate; 19, conflict of interest; and 21, bribery and corruption.

The same sanction also fell on former member of the executive committee of FIFA, former president of CONMEBOL, and former president of the Colombian Football Federation, Luis Bedoya, who along with Jadue was also investigated for corruption and fraud.

During the day yesterday, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), was recorded in the Vanuatu islands located in the South Pacific.

According to the USGS, the epicenter of this earthquake was centered at 0.6 mile (1  km) southeast of Norsup. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) preliminarily declared a tsunami alert in the South Pacific, which was later revised by the center.

This strong quake did not leave any reported wounded or damage to homes or structures in the area. The islands of Vanuatu are part of the famous “Ring of Fire” and for this reason earthquakes occur frequently of around this magnitude; one was registered early this month with a magnitude of 6.9.

During the day on Thursday, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0 degrees was recorded in Vanuatu islands located in the South Pacific.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of this earthquake was centered at 0.6mi (1km) SE of Norsup. The Tsunami Warning Center Pacific (PTWC) preliminarily tsunami alert was declared in the South Pacific, which was later ruled by the center.

This strong quake did not leave any wounded or damage to homes or structures in the area person. The islands of Vanuatu are part of the famous “Ring of Fire” and for this reason earthquakes occurring frequently that magnitude, it was registered last April 6 and had a magnitude of 6.9 degrees.

A little over 100 days before the scheduled start of the 2016 Summer Olympics, on Thursday the Olympic flame was ignited in a ceremony at the temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece. Actress Katerina Lehu played the role of priestess accompanied by fourteen virgins, lighting the flame at solar noon using sunlight focused by a parabolic mirror.

After lighting the “sacred fire” Lehu passed it to its first bearer, gymnast Lefteris Petrunias. According to El País, another torchbearer is to be a Syrian refugee, bearing it in the Eleonas refugee camp.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach said the lighting ceremony was writing history, and the Olympic Games would bring a message of hope in difficult times to Brazil and to the whole world. Over six days, the Olympic torch is to pass through more than 2000 kilometers of Greek territory, going through Marathon and the island of Corfu. This part of the ride ends at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens, site of the first modern Games of the Olympiad.

Subsequently, the flame travels by plane to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne where it is to stay for a week. Later, on May 2, it is to be moved to Brasilia. The relay trip of the Olympic flame from Olympia to the Olympic site was introduced by Carl Diem in the Berlin 1936 Games.

On Saturday night, a 7.8 – magnitude earthquake shook South American country Ecuador at 18:58 local time (23:58 UTC) with a depth of 20 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was located 27 km southeast of Muisne and was felt in the capital Quito and Guayaquil. There are at least 413 dead and more than 2,500 injured after the incident.

Citizens reported blackouts, severe damage to roads, the collapse of a pedestrian bridge in Guayaquil and the airport control tower of Manabi, and several buildings.

In a televised announcement, the vice-president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas said that no tsunami warning but are mobilising people for fear one and decreed a state of emergency to six provinces.

Ricardo Peñaherrera, on National Emergency Managment, said that more than 200 people lost their lives in Manabi. About 10,000 soldiers and 4,600 police officers came to the rescue of the civilians.

A CNN affiliate reported that firefighters from the Colombian capital Bogotá rescued him. Today, Ecuadorean president Rafael Correa said that rebuilding the nation would require billions of dollars which would hamper their economy.

83 rescue workers from Europe and more than 400 workers from neighbouring countries reached Eucador to help the victims. Cuba will be sending a team of doctors.
