American swimmers Allison Schmitt and Michael Phelps are seen here in the restaurant of the Athletes Village. At the event’s peak, the venue will prepare 60,000 meals each day. Phelps’ diet has received headlines in the past, clocking in at 12,000 calories a day in 2008.

It’s two days to go until the opening ceremonies, but the football competitions for the 2016 Summer Olympics have begun in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Meanwhile, athletes are arriving to the Olympic Village, which has been one of the many lightning rods of controversy for the event.

Wednesday includes six women’s football match-ups, between Sweden and South Africa, Canada and Australia, Brazil and China, Zimbabwe and Germany, United States and New Zealand, France and Colombia. Canada’s forward Janine Beckie scored a goal just 20 seconds into the game, the quickest in Olympic history. The team beat Australia 2-0.

The men face off Thursday with Iraq vs Denmark, Honduras vs Algeria, Brazil vs South Africa, Mexico vs Germany, Portugal vs Argentina, Sweden vs Colombia, Fiji vs South Korea, and Nigeria vs Japan.

Many athletes are arriving in Rio, for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Teams are welcomed with ceremonies, the India, Bahama, Burkina Faso, Gambia and Norway delegations receiving their a 45-minute welcome Wednesday. While members of the US swim team have been photographed in the Athletes Village restaurant, recent reports suggest that Team USA men’s basketball will be staying in a luxury cruise ship, docked off the Port of Rio. Canadian tennis player Daniel Nestor has suggested the village lacks hot water. Members of the Australian team had their three laptops stolen last week, during a building evacuation due to a nearby fire.

MV Suilven, a ferry in service in Fiji, capsized and sank in Suva Harbour today.

Around thirty people, all crewmembers, were on board. Local media report all were rescued. The 41-year-old vessel previously saw service in Scotland and New Zealand.

The ship capsized early this afternoon and sank within an hour. It had been converted from passenger to cargo use following its most recent sale, to Venu Shipping in 2012 or 2011. Local reports indicated police, the Navy, local tug boats, and volunteer rescuers all attended the accident.

The converted ferry reportedly began to list on entering the harbour. It was working a route carrying cargo between Suva and the Northern Division.

Built in Norway, in service from 1974, the ship served with Scottish ferry firm Caledonian MacBrayne until 1995, connecting the mainland town of Ullapool to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. It was ultimately replaced by a larger, faster vessel and was sold to Strait Shipping who used it until 2004 to ply New Zealand’s seas, connecting Wellington to Picton and to Nelson.

The name MV Suilven is in reference to the Suilven mountain in Scotland’s Sutherland region.

Searchers looking for New Zealand fishing boat FV Jubilee found the vessel on the sea floor overnight local time (UTC+13).

The search was sparked by a mayday call from the three-man crew early yesterday morning. The three fishermen said they were abandoning ship in favour of a lifeboat. The search, which covered roughly 170 square km, earlier located an empty lifeboat from FV Jubilee.

A police dive team was sent today to look for bodies. Police and owner-operator Ocean Fisheries believe the missing men are deceased. Weather conditions at the site, around 40 m deep and 22 km from the Rakaia River mouth, are reported with dropping wind and swells of 1.5 m.

“The sea conditions were rough,” said Ocean Fisheries boss Andrew Stark; “without knowing what was going wrong with the vessel we really can’t speculate, whether the sea was a cause or a contributing factor. Rough conditions are usual at sea, so we don’t believe the weather was severe enough to be the main contributing factor. There must have been something involved prior to that which caused the vessel to sink.”

Stark said the accident is “a mystery”. He said the company had trawled the area with other ships in the hope of retrieving corpses from the sea bed. In addition to Ocean Fisheries boats FV Legacy and FV Frontier, which used technology designed for locating fish to search for the wreck, search vehicles included a helicopter, a plane, and two Coastguard vessels. An emergency beacon, oil, fishing bins, and documentation are among the floating debris found.

Launched in January 2008, FV Jubilee is 16 m long and weighs 100 t.

The creation of a body designed to assist with the relocation of people who’s homes are threatened by climate change has been removed from Monday’s update of a UN draft agreement in the lead up to the December climate conference negotiations.

A previous draft crafted by the UN included a “climate change displacement coordination facility” that would provide “organised migration and planned relocation”, with further provisions to provide compensation and emergency relief for people who’s homelands have been left uninhabitable as a result of climate change. However a reference to such a body has ben removed from a revised text released in the lead up to the Paris conference. Australia opposed the measure. Indeed a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said,

“Australia does not see the creation of the climate change displacement coordination facility as the most effective or efficient way to progress meaningful international action to address the impacts of climate change, Australia is already working closely with our Pacific partners on these important issues.”

the UN estimates that climate change will displace 250 million people worldwide by 2050. Many of Australia’s low lying pacific island neighbours are at significant risk. Nations such as Kiribati, The Solomon Islands and Tuvala, face dangers to their food security, water supply and eroding coast lines. Kiribati has already bought land in Fiji, primarily to be used for agricultural purposes to help assure the nations food security. President Anote Tong has also raised the idea of having to relocate the entire nations population if sea levels continue to rise.

In light of this advocates have argued that a new international framework needs to be created to safeguard the interests of climate refugees or alternatively propose sufficient amendments to the current refugee convention, which as it currently stands does not cover them because they are not fleeing persecution.

Indeed last month Loane Teitiota, a Kiribati man who has been living in New Zealand was deported back to his native country after a failed attempt to be seek refugee status on the grounds of climate change. Mr Teitota argued that returning to Kiribati constituted a serious risk to both his and his family’s health due to contaminated water supplies and rising sea levels. New Zealand Prime Minister John Key stated that he did not find Mr Teitiotas’ plea to be a “credible argument.”

On Tuesday, the New Zealand government announced the start of a public process to suggest designs for a new national flag, and determine whether their citizens would prefer a different national flag over the current one.

The current flag of New Zealand.

The current New Zealand flag is partially based on the United Kingdom’s flag; the new one would be unique to New Zealand. The government’s Flag Consideration Project has planned a number of conferences and roadshows as part of this process, with the first meeting set to take place in Christchurch on May 16. According to the New Zealand Herald, Emeritus Professor John Burrows, the chairman of the project’s panel of twelve, said New Zealand’s flag has never before been open to public choice.

Professor Burrows also said resources and kits would be accessible for schools and communities, “For example, schools can run their own flag discussions and referendums to mirror the formal process as part of their own learning exercise”. People were encouraged to submit their designs online at www.flag.govt.nz and suggest what the flag should mean on www.standfor.co.nz. Names of participants would be engraved, at their option, on a flag pole monument to be built in the nation’s capital, Wellington.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key said he believes redesigning the flag now has a “strong rationale”. Mr Key promoted the campaign for a unique New Zealand flag on Waitangi Day — February 6 — this year. Of the public process, he said, “In the end I’ll have one vote in each referendum just like every other New Zealander on the electoral roll”.

The New Zealand government intends to hold two referendums to reach a verdict on the flag, at an estimated cost of NZ$26 million, although a recent poll found only a quarter of citizens favoured changing the flag. This is a decrease from the year before, when it was forty percent. The first referendum is to be held from November 20 to December 11, selecting a single new flag design out of about four finalists. Voters would then choose between the new flag and their current flag early in 2016.

A crowd of over 10,000 people attended the dawn service on Saturday at Gallipoli, Turkey for the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops there in 1915. The solemn remembrance ceremony was held at the site of the original Gallipoli landings, now known as Anzac Cove.

The Gallipoli Campaign of the First World War is remembered as a failed attack in which thousands of lives were lost for little to no gain for either side. The campaign killed 45,000 Allied and 86,000 Turkish troops.

Attendees at the dawn service included Prince Charles, the Prime Minister of Australia, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott‘s speech later in the day emphasised the importance of the day to Australians. “Like every generation since, we are here on Gallipoli because we believe the Anzacs represented Australians at their best. Because they rose to their challenges, we believe it is a little easier for us to rise to ours. Their example helps us to be better than we would otherwise be”, he said.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key at dawn described Gallipoli as a symbol of the highest ideals of Australians and New Zealanders “especially when they work side by side in the face of adversity”.

Prince Charles stirred emotions by reading extracts from a serviceman’s diary. The diary entry, by Company Quartermaster Sergeant Benjamin Leane, was addressed to his wife and was written hours before the first Gallipoli landing.

The centenary milestone of Anzac Day also drew a Turkish security force of 3700, both police and paramilitary. Attendees entered past six security checkpoints.

A record 120,000 people also attended services at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to commemorate the centenary.
