According to Persepolis officials, Afshin Ghotbi met up with the representatives of the club in Dubai on Thursday, and signed a two year deal with the Iranian champions.

The news will come as a shock to many, after Ghotbi, who won the Iranian title with Persepolis last season, decided against renewing his contract at the end of the season.

However, Persepolis has undergone major changes since the end of the season, with the managing director of the club, Habib Kashani leaving the club.

Hamid Estiti , who was Ghotbi’s number two has also departed.

There has been no news on who will become Ghotbi’s assistant, and Ghotbi is expected to announce his assistants when he returns to Iran on Friday.

Persepolis Still Looking For A Coach

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Newly-appointed Persepolis general manager Dariush Mostafavi has said that Afshin Peyrovani will stay as the team’s caretaker boss until a new head coach for this team is appointed.

Afshin Ghotbi led the Reds to the league title in May before resigning and Persepolis are still searching for a replacement.

Speaking at Persepolis’ first training session, Dariush Mostafavi said: “We are making efforts to find the best coach for Persepolis but it may take time, therefore Peyrovani is the team’s caretaker.”

He also had a message for the players. “You have raised the people’s expectations after winning the Iran Pro League championship and be sure they will pay tribute to you. I don’t care about where you stand at the end of the season but you ought to do your best.”

Persepolis Champions Of Iran With Injury-Time Winner

On a day of pure drama, the Tehran giants defeated leaders Sepahan 2-1 to become champions of Iran for the first time since 2003.

With the game almost over, Heidari rose in the middle of a crowded penalty box to head home and send 110,000 fans in the famous arena into a frenzy.

Persepolis, who started the day two points behind their opponents, attacked from the start and took the lead in style after 17 minutes.

Mohsen Khalili chested the ball down just outside the area and volleyed home with a shot that gave Masound Hemami in the Sepahan goal no chance.

The Iranian striker smacked a shot against the underside of the Sepahan crossbar four minutes later when through on goal. Karim Bagheri headed the rebound over the bar.

Persepolis were rueing that miss when Sepahan equalised after 28 minutes. Ehsan Hajsafi was fed with a long ball over the top of the Reds defence and the teenager advanced into the area and slotted the ball coolly home.

The hosts spent most of the second half camped out in the Sepahan half but were unable to break down the Sepahan defence until the last seconds.

The ball spun off Heidari’s head and looped over Masoud Hemami and into the top corner of the Sepahan goal to spark pandemonium.

It is the eighth title for Persepolis and a first for coach Afshin Ghotbi in his first season with the club.
