Two powerful earthquakes are reported to have occurred on Thursday morning just after midnight UTC, one in Indonesia and one in Japan. According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake is reported to have hit Indonesia, Japan was then hit by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake approximately 20 minutes later. The USGS reports the Indonesia earthquake as being centred 2460km ENE of Jakarta. The Japan quake is reported to have occurred near Hokkaido island in Northern Japan. Indonesia and Japan may have issued Tsunami alerts.
