The United Kingdom, much of which was placed on flood alert.

The United Kingdom’s government weather agency, the Met Office, has put much of the UK on flood alert with severe weather warnings for the majority of England and Wales and much of Northern Ireland.

The office has said that a total of ten regions have a greater than eighty percent chance of “severe or extreme weather.” These regions are Southwest Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Northern Ireland, Wales, Northwest England, Northeast England, Yorkshire and Humber, the West Midlands, the East Midlands, Southwest England and London and Southeast England.

It is possible that Southeast Scotland may also be affected by the severe weather. The Met Office report that “there is a moderate risk of a severe weather event affecting south-eastern Scotland. Rain, heavy at times, will continue during Saturday, giving further accumulations of 20 to 25 mm in places.”

A total of 63 flood watches and 25 flood warnings have also been issued, in addition to the severe weather warnings.

According to a spokesperson for the Environment Agency, “the threat of flooding is likely to increase, we cannot say how serious it might be until the rain has stopped falling.”

A person experiencing the floods in Wales said that “it is absolute mayhem. The rain has been unbelievable all day. The roads are flooded and it has just been terrible traffic everywhere.”

2008 United States Presidential Election
Wikinews Election 2008.svg
2008 U.S. Presidential Election stories

Throughout the 2008 United States Presidential election campaign, Wikinews reporters have been talking to candidates of all political stripes, looking for their vision of America and campaign stories. This series continues now with Jackson Kirk Grimes of the United Fascist Union (UFU).

Mr. Grimes dictated the answers to Heather Goldsmith, his party’s Propaganda Minister, who transcribed them for Wikinews.

Grimes has been the director and CEO of the UFU since 1996, and ran for the President’s office in 2000 and 2004. Grimes is known internally as His Highness or His Excellency. He was a Storm Trooper for the Fascist Freedom Front, from 1967-1975. He was a Corporal for the United States Army (18th Corps of Army Engineers) from 1968-1972, certified stock broker in the 1990s, a member of the Screen Actors’ Guild since 1996, and received his GED from the Ohio State Department of Education in 1991.

Note that Grimes appears not to have qualified for either ballot status or as a formally recognized write-in candidate in any state, according to Politics1.

Interview

Why should Americans vote for you, your party, and your campaign’s platform?

Fascism is the one economic system that’s proven to work, and work well in country after country every time any nation has been fortunate enough to have a fascist head of state. Corporate Statism is the only economic system that has actually created ECONOMIC EQUALITY in all lands it’s governed from Italy under our founder, Benito Mussolini, to Iraq, where Saddam Hussein was our head of state. If the Americans know what is good for them they had better put Jackson Grimes in the White House this time, and put an end to the shell game the political pigs in power now, are running on the masses.

The election is nearing, and campaigns for all parties are reaching their final leg. What are your plans for the remaining weeks of the campaign? How will you continue to build on the awareness and momentum of your campaign?

Mr. Grimes will continue to go anywhere that they pay him to be, in America & Canada. Of course, we will continue to court the press with form letters, do interactive radio shows, create blogs, and do whatever is necessary to make sure Jackson Grimes becomes the next President of the United States of America.

If you aren’t elected President in this election, can we expect to see your return to the ballot in 2012?

No.

If readers are interested in your campaign, in what ways can they get involved?

Françoise Demulder, the French war photographer who was the first woman to win the World Press Photo of the Year award has died at the age of 61. The death was caused by a heart attack.

The World Press Photo website says that “Demulder stated at the time that she hated war, but felt compelled to document how it’s always the innocent who suffer, while the powerful get richer and richer.” This is why the organization presented her with the award in 1977.

During her career Demulder reported on wars in Vietnam, Palestine, Cambodia and Lebanon. Her photograph of refugees in Beirut won her the press photography award.

Jonathan Randall, a Washington Post correspondent who knew Demulder, paid his tributes to the photographer. “This was a time when there were beginning to be women correspondents but there were relatively few women photographers,” he said. “When she won the prize it was really quite something. It showed that women were capable of doing what had hitherto been a man’s occupation.”

Christine Albanel, the French culture minister, described Françoise Demulder as “an artist and witness of our time.”

According to numbers released Friday by the Nielsen Media Research company, a record 38.9 million Americans watched John McCain accept the nomination for President of the United States from the Republican Party on Thursday at the 2008 Republican National Convention.

The previous record for American viewership during a political convention was set last month when Barack Obama accepted the Democratic Party nomination. About 38.4 million people watched Obama. On Wednesday, 37 million people tuned in to see vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin speak.

Thursday’s audience was 41 percent larger than the fourth day of the 2004 Republican National Convention, when 27.5 million people watched George W. Bush accept the nomination of his party for a second time.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the demographics of the viewers differed from Obama on Friday to McCain on Thursday. McCain’s speech drew 19.2 million men, while Obama drew 17.9 million. Obama’s speech drew 19.9 million women, while McCain drew 19.2. Among white viewers, 32.2 million watched McCain, while 27 million watched Obama. Among African American viewers, 7.5 million watched Obama, while 3.1 million watched McCain.

According to Reuters, the format by which Nielsen conducts its research — known as the Nielsen Ratings — has changed since 2004, adding two networks and factoring in people who watched the speech via a digital video recorder. According to the Los Angeles Times, people who watched coverage of the conventions on PBS were not counted. PBS estimates about 4 million people watch their coverage nightly during the convention.

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, Univision, Telemundo broadcast on day four of the GOP convention. Univision and Telemundo, which broadcast in Spanish, were not included in 2004. In addition, BET and TV One, which covered day four of the Democratic convention did not cover the Republican convention.

The OTE Tower and the Velidio Conference Center at the Thessaloniki International Fair area.

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis is already in Thessaloniki in order to take part tomorrow night at the official inauguration of the 73th Thessaloniki International Fair. Karamanlis, who arrived in the northern Greek city yesterday, while today Friday the Greek Prime Minister has scheduled visits to the construction works of the Thessaloniki Metro and the National Research and Technological Development Center. The political interest of the country has moved to Thessaloniki these days, as long as the Prime Minister will deliver his major annual speech on Saturday night in presense of the cabinet, members of the Greek Parliament, local authorities, trade union’ representatives and businessmen from northern Greece.

However, on Saturday many protest marches have been scheduled to take place in the city, demonstrating against the economic policies of the government. The major demonstration, organized by the labour unions of GSEE and ADEDY, has been set for Saturday evening at 20:00 local time (GTM+2) in Thessaloniki’s center and a march will try to approach the Velidio Conference Center. According to Naftemporiki, around 2,000 extra policemen are already in the city in order to maintain security in the area around the International Fair, while local authorities want to avoid any kind of clashes between anarchist and police special forces. It should be noted that anti-authoritarian movements and independent anarchist groups have planned to take part in Thessaloniki’s demonstration, something which creates concern to Greek Police. As a result of local attorney’s decision, the gates of the Aristotle University near the Exchibition Center will remain closed for security reasons, while four major avenues of the city center will be closed after 18:00 local time according to the local Makedonia newspaper.

According to members of the government, Prime Minister Karamanlis is expected to emphasize New Democracy’s achievements in almost four years in government while avoiding promises of handouts, although he may announce some changes regarding economical issues, like the tax system.
