A graduate student attending Yale University who went missing five days before her planned wedding was found dead on Sunday, police said.

Annie Le, an American doctoral student seeking a degree in medicine, went missing on September 8, five days before her planned wedding. Investigators reviewed footage from the security cameras of 10 Amistad, the building where Le last entered, and found no evidence that she had left. Police scouring the building found a body, later identified as Le’s, hidden in a wall. Earlier, police had found bloody clothes in the ceiling, which they think belonged to the killer.

According to the medical examiner, Le had been strangled.

Le was set to marry Jonathan Widawsky, a graduate student studying physics at Columbia University.

Police believe that there was a motive, and that the slaying was not random. A lab technician, who was labeled a “person of interest” by police, had failed a polygraph and had defensive wounds on his chest, was detained and later released. However, no arrests have been made in connections with the homicide, according to a police spokesman.

In December 1998, Suzanne Jovin was found murdered on the Yale campus.

Brawn-Mercedes driver Rubens Barrichello won the FIA Formula One 2009 Gran Premio Santander d’Italia at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Italy. His team-mate Jenson Button came second.

The Brazilian led the race after the McLaren team carried out a second pit-stop for Lewis Hamilton, who had led from pole position. The last spot on the podium was filled by Kimi Räikkönen in a Ferrari after Hamilton crashed dramatically on the last lap chasing Button too hard.

Brawn executed a one pit-stop strategy that allowed them to save time they would lose otherwise by competing with the KERS-equipped cars in front of them on the grid.

Once again the race gave a good result for the Force India team as Adrian Sutil chased Räikkönen. Starting from second place on the grid, Sutil was quickly passed by the KERS-equipped Räikkönen’s car in the first corner as in the previous race he overtook the pole-sitter Giancarlo Fisichella, who is now racing for Ferrari.

The other Force India driver, Vitantonio Liuzzi, surprised the spectators by qualifying 7th on Saturday, but he retired on lap 22 when his transmission broke.

Fernando Alonso pushed hard throughout the race to finish fifth and score 4 more points for Renault, ahead of the McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen.

Nick Heidfeld managed to get two points for BMW Sauber after starting from the back of the grid as far as 15th. Championship third contender Sebastian Vettel today closed the starting grid with one point for Red Bull Racing, while Mark Webber was out of the race after pushed by Robert Kubica in his car rear.

Italian Fisichella was very emotional after he borrowed Felipe Massa’s vacant place from Luca Badoer by joining the Italian team. He finished 9th.

Jenson Button strengthen his lead in the Championship with 80 points total. His team-mate is 2 points closer to him after this race with 66 points. Vettel is 12 points behind Barrichello and Webber 14.5 points with Räikkönen only half the points of Button. The lead constructor is still the Brawn team with 146. Red Bull 40.5 points behind, others farther behind.

A humpback whale has been found dead in the River Thames in London, England.

The whale was a male juvenile and measured 28 feet (9 metres). It was the first whale of its kind to be found in the river. The first and only reported sighting of the whale was on Thursday when it was spotted in the same river, between the London districts of Northfleet and Tilbury. Scientific experts suspected that the creature may have been a bottlenose whale at the time. There were no subsequent sightings of the whale until Saturday morning, when the humpback whale’s carcass was found near Dartford Bridge. After being moved to Denton Wharf at Gravesend in Kent, a postmortem examination by the Zoological Society of London revealed that he had died of starvation, and was estimated to be about two years old. The tests are currently still ongoing.

Rob Deaville, a zoologist at the society said: “Once [whales] get into the river system it is very difficult for them to get out again. Further tests are still pending and may provide additional information about what happened to this whale.” Deaville is the project’s manager. He also commented: “Preliminary results from the post-mortem examination indicate that it may have died as a result of starvation. There have only been 12 strandings of humpback whales in the last 20 years and this is an incredibly unusual event.”

“Although it’s obviously a sad outcome in this instance, the post-mortem examination has given us a rare opportunity to examine a truly extraordinary animal at close quarters. Information gathered through examinations like these will hopefully help further our understanding of such animals and also help contribute to improving their conservation status.”

A spokesman for the Indonesian government has said that at least 38 people were killed following flash flooding in the North Sumatra province on Tuesday.

The flood, which began in the early morning, struck the Mandailing Natal Regency, 275 kilometres from the provincial capital, Medan.

The country’s health ministry crisis centre leader, Rustam Pakaya, said the floods began at 2:00 local time (UTC+7) and soon reached a depth of two metres. Pakaya said that rescue efforts were hampered by muddy roads.

“Our latest information from the local district head is that 38 bodies have been found so far. Our main priority is to rescue the survivors. The flash floods hit six villages with about 2,200 residents,” said spokesman Edy Sysopian to the Agence France-Presse news agency.

“The rescue process is difficult because the two bridges […] to the villages collapsed. The other way to reach the affected area is by sea using speed boats, but strong weather […] is making that difficult.”

Syamsul Arifin, the North Sumatra governor, said that fifty tonnes of rice were sent to the victims of the flooding out of government reserves.

The governor said that “we have instructed the local social services office to provide food and assistance, including blankets and tents, while for the time being the health office is providing medicine.”
