London, England — In an interview with Samoa’s Chef de Mission at the London Paralympics, Julie Tuala said she hopes to get a powerlifting program under way in Samoa following the London Games.

The Samoa Paralympic Committee, she explained, with assistance from the Oceania Paralympic Committee is submitting a grant request to acquire the equipment necessary for a powerlifting program in Samoa; equipment costs around A$18,000 to A$20,000 used, and is specifically built for paraplegic competitors who need to be strapped down when lifting. If Samoa is successful in getting the money for the equipment, the next challenge will be finding money to cover the cost of freighting it to Samoa. Tuala and the nation’s athletics coach have previously held raffles, run events at a golf club, and run bake sales to assist in covering costs for developing disability sport in the country and look to do it again if they can get the grant. The last grant the International Paralympic Committee gave for the region for the equipment did not include Samoa.

According to Tuala, equipment costs are a major barrier to participation in the development of disability sport. Samoan London Paralympian Leitu Viliamu needs a new leg as she has outgrown hers. A high quality leg like the one worn by Oscar Pistorius can cost upwards of AUD$10,000 per leg. Viliamu and fellow Samoan Paralympian Milo Toleafoa only acquired real running shoes for the first time when they arrived in London.

Samoa has primarily sent athletics competitors to past Paralympics because of the cost factor.

Death has a great lobby in US

The life extension community is outraged by the unprecedented incident. US democracy does not work when it comes to the question of fighting aging. The scandal emerged when the most important scientific question suggested by the recent Science Debate[1]” poll as #1 question scientific community wants to ask president candidates was not found amongst the questions that the candidates were asked indeed. Nature magazine has recently published how US Presidential candidates “tackle 14 top science questions”[2]. To recall, the “top science question” that won in that poll was “Should the United States fund a “War on Aging” and that question gathered 3 times more votes that any other[3]. Yet, it was not included among the “top questions” to “tackle”. There is a need to mention that scientific community for many years tries to attract attention to the scientific revolution taking place in life extension sphere. The scientific successes in rejuvenation and extending a lifespan of model animals (mice-2.5 times, yeast −15 times, nematodes-10 times) and discovery of variety of species (including humans of advanced ages)[4] having negligible senescence give hope to achieve negligible senescence (cancel ageing) for younger humans, reverse ageing or at least significantly delay it. It means a very long life for currently living people, much longer that you can imagine yourself. In spite of the developments mentioned above and the fact that ageing is admitted to be the major cause of mortality in developed world[5][6] the anti-ageing and life extension research is greatly underfunded. [7] Although human life is declared to be a basic value in many societies the fighting aging is not yet in focus of public attention for some reasons. In this case somebody lobbied against interests of life extension that will inspire a new round of conspiracy theories and journalists investigations to find these death lobbyists and explore their true intentions.
