Saturday, April 30, 2016

Orphans all over the world are celebrated today, 20th April, 2016. The theme for this year World Orphan Day is, No War No hunger. Today is set aside to show them love in different ways as a reminder that they are recognized, valued, cared for, integral part of the society, and their future guaranteed. Africa Connect Platform – ACP identifies and appreciates orphans around the world, in Africa, and locally. ACP members have contributed personally, some through foundations to support this cause. More innovative ideas are conceived with passion to create a brighter future for orphans.

ORPHANS – WHO THEY REALLY ARE.’

There are so many views and definitions on orphans. Orphans ranges from children to adults. However, emphasis are placed more on children since they are helpless. A comprehensive definition of an orphan is a child who has lost a parent or both parents, a child who has been totally abandoned by a parent or both parents.

Parents are the only channel one can have access to the earth. To lose a parent or both doesn’t kill the destiny in that child or person and that’s where humanitarian service should be implemented to support and make their potential, dreams and vision a reality.

Circumstances have thrown unexpected situations to many children and other individuals to become orphans. They include wars, diseases, crimes, terrorism, extreme famine, death during labour, intentional abandonment, disability, born with infirmity, etc.

There are many children living with HIV/AIDS. This complicates the situation as extra care is needed to help them live a more productive life. This would be treated in another article.

The Ebola outbreak left its ugly mark in some countries in Africa. The trauma, harsh realities of life, sudden loss of loved ones, limited or no provision to basic necessities of life are what the survivors are left to endure on a daily basis. Imagine an orphan with this predicament.

SOLUTIONS, RESOLUTIONS, AND IMPLEMENTATIONS.

In the wake of the Ebola outbreak my country Sierra Leone has been plagued with Ebola orphans and they have been left with no care. They have dropped out of schools and most live on the streets fending for themselves. Society should take up these kids and raise them for the benefit of us all. With sound education they can be in a better position to be economically independent. Provision of shelter is important to get them off the street in order not to pose risk to the community, they need to be clothed and fed too because they have a right to food and clean water. All these require money and our collective efforts to saving humanity. People who take advantage of the situation for their personal enrichment should be sanctioned!!! Funds provided by donors should be directed toward kids that really deserve the funds. As community members, it should be our duty to put resources together to help orphans. Total dependence on donor funds should not be encouraged as we can handle some of these issues. Rural kids are the most affected since they attract less attention from members of the public. Orphanages should cater for orphans and not those whose parents are alive and can cater for them. – King Alfred.

Orphans need comfort, they need to know they are not alone. Regular visitation should be a mission to share and comfort them, they need opportunities.

There are several ways to create positive impact on orphans. This goes through sound governmental policies, education, relevant bodies, religious bodies, institutions, personal zeal in improving upon the lives of vulnerable children. – Maseko, Ade, Victor.

Orphanages with good practices should be shown to the world for sponsorship especially those in the rural areas.

[[ img%20class= “wp-image-462%20alignright”%20src=”http://www.africaconnect.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Orphans-5-300×208.jpg”%20alt=”Orphans-5″%20width=”345″%20height=”239″%20srcset=”http://www.africaconnect.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Orphans-5-300×208.jpg%20300w,%20http://www.africaconnect.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Orphans-5-624×432.jpg%20624w,%20http://www.africaconnect.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Orphans-5.jpg%20650w”%20sizes=”(max-width:%20345px)%20100vw,%20345px” WOD2]]

Orphanages across Africa have been used by the runners as a money making machine having little or no regard for the progress of the kids. What is more frustrating is the fact that people who deserve to be cared for are left out whilst those with existing parents are taken care of in these places because of the benefits it brings. People must turn a new leaf in Africa by conducting a proper survey capturing kids who truly need the help from orphanages. Education is important to save future generations from societal problems caused by neglect in order not to end up as criminals. A proper monitoring body to ensure the kids are well catered for in those places is necessary. Innovative idea of building orphanage schools where orphans will be given the opportunity to access quality education on a scholarship basis, their uniforms and other school learning materials catered for should be implemented. Kids upon completion and with a very decent job should be prepared and ready to give back to society.

A system should be setup for donations from the public ranging from money, clothes, shoes, toys, educational materials, etc to orphans in rural areas. This idea should be replicated across Africa.

My vision is in progress as Destykids Foundation is enrolling 1500 non-school going children by year ending 2016 with 150 from each of our ten regions. – Gideon.

I will love to partake in the celebration by twittering about the plight of orphans in my country and pay them a visit later in the month. – Ngalemakia.

More kindheartedness: Total of $900 raised for the #Ebola widow I met in a gift shop yesterday selling her wedding rings to be able to pay her children’s school fees. A Sierra Leonean in Liberia sent $100, another in London sent $100, a senior female lawyer in Freetown gave me $333, Jalika Bah in the US sent $292, someone in my office gave $35. Additionally, a local NGO Project Pikin has pledged to pay the kids’ fees next academic year. Many friends of Sierra Leone have escalated my posts and are raising something for Mabinty and her two children – a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy. They have been living under reduced circumstances since the husband died in late 2014 and need a lot of help. God bless all you kind hearted people.orphan Mabinty, herself an Ebola survivor, was in tears when I called her today to tell her how much had come through. Crying for her late husband who was the family’s breadwinner, but also shedding tears because of the empathy you have expressed for her. She thanks and prays that God will reward all those who have parted with their “hard-earned money to rescue me and my poor children one of whom fell ill last night with typhoid and I had to take her to the hospital today with part of the money I received from you yesterday”. Help a needy Ebola victim! – Umaru Fofanah.

A bus explosion in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, on Monday killed two Armenians and reportedly injured at least seven others. Deputy head of the rescue service at the Ministry of Emergency Situations Major-General Grigoryan said the blast was reported on Monday at 10:00pm local time (1800 UTC).

In remarks to News.am, Armenian Health Minister Armen Muradyan said six injured were transported to a local medical centre. One passenger was revealed to be pregnant, and News.am reported at least five others were in critical condition.

Reportedly the blast destroyed nearby houses’ windows, and could be heard for miles.

While authorities are still investigating the incident, the Emergencies Ministry said the bus was using diesel fuel so it wasn’t a gas explosion. In remarks to Associated Press (AP), investigative committee member Sona Truzyan said they have considered and rejected a terrorist explanation. Truzyen reported the committee is currently investigating a party to a domestic dispute. An investigator told AP the suspect had threatened to give them a bomb, which could have exploded accidentally en route to its intended target.

The suspect’s telephone SIM card was recovered from the scene,. A detonator, TNT, and other electronics were found at his residence, and evidence of TNT was discovered on the bus.

A 2016 study by crowdsourced site Numbeo says Armenia has the 93rd highest crime rate in the word. It’s behind a number of other countries, including the United States and many European countries.

General Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia said they would give the public regular updates on the ongoing investigation.

New research aims to reduce family violence harms on children

New research aims to reduce family violence harms on children

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

The University of Tasmania and The Salvation Army family violence study in Tasmania, released Tuesday in Hobart Australia shows that significant investment is needed in programs designed to raise men’s awareness of the harmful psychological impacts on children.

File photo: Gender-based domestic violence.
Image: Concha García Hernández.

Training programs that target the perpetrators of family violence aim to educate them on these harms, however a research team identified a huge ‘evidence gap’ in resources used for developing such programs. The study found that while there are numerous programs for this purpose, none have been properly assessed to determine their effectiveness.

Children living in households where they witness violence can suffer significant emotional and psychological trauma, including post traumatic stress disorder. UNICEF estimates that as many as 275 million children worldwide are exposed to violence in the home and more recently, found that this issue costs countries in East Asia and the Pacific US$31 billion per year.

Almost 90 experts were consulted as part of the Increasing Men’s Awareness of the Effects on Children Exposed to Family and Domestic Violence study, which sought their suggestions on how to achieve this. The experts were drawn from a range of services in the family and domestic violence field, from front-line workers such as police officers and welfare staff, to researchers.

Their feedback contributed to 35 recommendations being made in the report, situated under the key themes of awareness-raising, program content and delivery, resourcing and ongoing research. One of the recommendations includes rolling out a promotional campaign throughout the community to highlight the harms, while also targeting male-dominated workplaces.

The study was a partnership between the University of Tasmania and The Salvation Army.
