Argentina’s football captain Lionel Messi spoke of retirement from international football after losing 4–2 to Chile in the penalty decider in Copa América Centenario final on Sunday. Since then, many players including his present FC Barcelona teammate Luis Suárez, former teammates David Villa and Ronaldinho, former Argentina captain Diego Maradona, and Argentine president Mauricio Macri have expressed disappointment, some urging him to stay.

Messi missed the penalty kick after Chilean Autero Vidal‘s spot kick was stopped by Sergio Romero as the match progressed to a penalty shootout. Javier Mascherano and Sergio Agüero scored their spot kicks for Argentina, but after Lucas Biglia‘s penalty was saved by Claudio Bravo, Francisco Silva scored the winning penalty for Chile.

Messi was crying after the match, and later told news reporters, “In the dressing room I thought that this is the end for me with the national team, it’s not for me”((es)). He added, “I tried so hard to be champion with Argentina. Now I am leaving without having managed it”((es)).

Today, Suárez speaking to Radio Tenfield said, “Knowing Leo, I’m sure it was said in a moment of sadness and helplessness. It would be a shame for football if he took this decision, but I’m sure he will reconsider and change his mind.”

Yesterday, president Mauricio Macri and Maradona urged him to think about his decision.

Messi’s former teammate David Villa said, “It’s very bad news for soccer. Messi is the best player in the world. […] I don’t know what happened in his mind[…] I know he’s strong, a professional player, he’s sure now disappointed because he lost one more final in penalty kicks again.”

Ronaldinho, former Brazilian player and ex-Barcelona player, told America TV he respects Messi’s opinion and he would be always with him.

Five time World Player of the Year Messi has lost four finals on the international stage, of which three defeats came in the last three years — 2014 FIFA World Cup loss to Germany, last year’s loss to Chile, and this year’s.

Sergio Agüero told Argentine newspaper Olé other players were also deciding weather to hang up their boots.

Messi played for Argentina when they won the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal.

North American Leaders\’ Summit to occur in Ottawa

North American Leaders’ Summit to occur in Ottawa

Later today, U.S. President Barack Obama is set to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for the North American Leaders’ Summit (being deemed the “Three Amigos” by media) in Ottawa.

This is Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first Summit meeting with other leaders. Last year’s North American Leaders’ Summit did not occur due to a precarious political situation between the countries. Nevertheless, impromptu topics of discussion have been estimated to be the United Kingdom’s recent referendum to exit the European Union as well as U.S. political candidates — especially Donald Trump.

This summit is not predicted to occur next year as both political candidates for the U.S. presidency (one of whom will have replaced Obama at that time) have shown differing views than the current leaders at the summit. Hillary Clinton — despite her support of a North American Trade Agreement in 1993 — has shown disagreement with NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) — previously stating that NAFTA “has hurt a lot of workers”. Donald Trump not only disagrees with NAFTA — calling it a “disaster” — but also has scorned Mexico and its government throughout his political campaign: scorns that could drastically alter U.S. — Mexico relations in the future.

Trudeau and Peña Nieto both will hold their terms in office long after 2016. Trudeau’s first term will end in 2019 and possibly continue into 2023 whilst Peña Nieto’s term of office will end in 2018. President Obama, however, will end his term in January of next year, making this not only Justin Trudeau’s first summit but Obama’s fifth and last summit.

The first North American Leaders’ Summit occurred in 2005 in Waco, Texas with then-leaders U.S. President George W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, and Mexican President Vincente Fox. 14 years prior the treaty labelled NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was signed by all three countries.

Only two summits have not occurred in their 11 year history: the 2010 summit in Wakefield, Quebec, Canada (with host leader Stephen Harper) and the 2015 summit which — unlike the 2010 summit — was never scheduled due to harsh political relations, especially between the United States and Mexico.

Richard Nixon’s parliamentary address, 1972

President Barack Obama will also be speaking in joint sessions at the Canadian Senate and House of Commons — the last address taking place by Bill Clinton almost two decades prior — after an invitation by Justin Trudeau. Obama will be the 7th president to do so — his other 6 predecessors being: Harry Truman (1947), Dwight D. Eisenhower (twice; 1953, 1958), John F. Kennedy (1961), Richard Nixon (1972), Ronald Reagan (twice; 1981, 1987), and Bill Clinton (1995).

Yesterday, three individuals committed a suicide attack on Ataturk airport in Istanbul, Turkey.

The attack started with the three individuals shooting weapons near the terminal entrance. After police started to return fire the individuals blew themselves up.

41 people were killed in the attack, and at least another 239 injured, according to officials. Those killed include nationals of several countries, including Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the Turkish Prime Minister, Binali Yildirim, stated current details point towards the Islamic State (IS) militant group as the culprits. This group has previously been blamed for a number of attacks in Turkey since last July.

The BBC reported IS have been targeting Turkey as being too connected to the West through NATO, as well as seeing its government as not being Islamic enough.

The attacks have led to concerns for the Turkish tourism sector, considered important to the country’s economy.

President Barack Obama of the United States and President Vladmir Putin of Russia both condemned the attack. Russia also announced it had lifted trade and travel restrictions which had been in place since Turkey shot down a Russian fighter Jet last November.

Today has been declared a day of national mourning in Turkey.

Members of Parliament (MPs) for the Labour Party, a political party in the United Kingdom (UK), have today voted in favour of a no-confidence motion towards their leader, Jeremy Corbyn.

The vote follows over 20 members of the Shadow cabinet resigning blaming Mr Corbyn’s performance leading up to last Thursday’s referendum on the UK’s membership on the European Union (EU). The Labour party had campaigned for the UK to remain in the EU.

During the vote 172 Labour MPs voted in favour of the motion, while 40 voted against it. Four ballots were spoilt, and thirteen MPs chose not to vote.

Following the vote, Mr Corbyn refused to resign, saying he was elected leader “by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning.” He also stated the vote was not binding.

After the referendum last Thursday the UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron, also announced his intention to resign by October.
