More than 270 civilians were killed in 24 hours from militant shelling in Syrian cities according to a report on Saturday from the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Sides in Syria. The report, published on the Russian Defense Ministry website, also stated that hundreds of civilians have been injured.

In a message directed to the UN‘s Secretary General and Security Council head, the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry reported the attacks came from “moderate” opposition groups that were joining the Al-Nusra Front and its affiliates in Aleppo, Syria. According to the Center on Saturday, one of the opposition groups, Ahram al-Sham, joined the Al-Nusra Front for an attack against Kurdish militias, which effectively forced Kurds to retreat from their positions in the city on Saturday.

The militants’ reported new offensive took place in a cessation of Russian and Syrian warplane activity beginning over a week earlier, which enabled the militants to regroup. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the cessation was meant to permit groups coordinating with the United States and Russia to separate themselves from the the Al-Nusra Front.

However, Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said on television that the United States had requested Russia avoid targeting the Al-Nusra Front, which has affiliations with al-Qaeda. In response, a US State Department spokesperson stated on Friday that the request was to avoid targeting civilians or legitimate opposition.

At the Brisbane Magistrates Court, a 19-year-old man from Brisbane, Australia was granted bail on Saturday after being charged with raping a 15-year-old girl late last week.

Coat of Arms of Queensland.

Magistrate John Costello granted the defendant bail on condition he report to the police station three times weekly, stay at home at his current address at night unless his work required otherwise, and contact neither complainant nor witness.

At the hearing, there was a question of whether the defendant knew the victim’s age. Patrick Quinn, the defendant’s lawyer, claimed she showed the defendant fake identification showing she was over 18, and only told him her real age the next day. Sergeant Scott Pearson, Police prosecutor, said the defendant’s texts to friends indicated he was aware she was underage, and said one person advised he “get rid of the evidence”. The court was told the girl maintained she had been honest about her age from the beginning and had not shown any false identification.

Consent was also questioned. Quinn argued all the sexual activity was consensual. The defendant admitted to oral and vaginal sex, but not sodomy.

The two had met Thursday night at the Royal George Hotel in Fortitude Valley before heading to his home around 3:00 local time. The man was charged with four counts of rape, as well as one count of unlawful sodomy of a person under 18 and three counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

The defendant is to be tested for disease. The Court is to resume the case on July 4, 2016.

FGM Survivors Campaign Against Practice

FGM Survivors Campaign Against Practice

For many, the age of five is an innocent age of beginning school and playing with friends. Though, for Amal Kowhah and many other young girls from Sudan, her young memories are stained with fear and pain.

At the age of five, like many others like her her body was scarred by a practice known as Female Genital Mutilation. Whilst restrained, a woman completed the procedure without anaesthetic, and then stitched her ‘to protect her eligibility for marriage’. Undertaking the procedure was believed to keep girls pure for marriage, says the North Sudanese born woman.

As 90% of women aged 15 to 49 in Sudan have undergone the procedure, Kowhah, along with Sierra Leone born Khadija Gbla have been campaigning against FGM. The women are fighting for the world to see what FGM really is – a violation of girls’ human rights, child abuse and a crime. Gbla comes from a country with no legislation banning FGM, with 81% of women having undergone the practice before they were 14 years old. Gbla was traumatised by the procedure, as she can never have children and describes it as a ‘life sentence’.

According to the United Nations, 200 million girls and women worldwide live with FGM. The challenge for those such as Gbla and her No FGM Australia co-founder, Melbourne teacher Paula Ferrari is to support women who have had FGM to say no to remnant cultural pressure.

In Australia, a survey of paediatricians by Elizabeth Elliott’s surveillance unite released last year found 10% of Australian paediatricians have seen at least one case of a girl 18 or younger who have had FGM. Sixteen doctors had seen it in the past five years, observing 59 cases.

Elliott says that communities and small groups need to know that professional groups are on their side.

The location of Aleppo in Syria.

Militants in northern Syria have shelled Syrian cities over the past 48 hours, killing more than 270 civilians with many injured, according to the information bulletin of the Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Sides in Syria. The information bulletin was published at the Russian Defense Ministry website on Saturday.

The Russian military also reports that the Al-Nusra Front and Ahram al-Sham militants are attacking Kurdish militias, forcing them to retreat from their earlier position in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

The militant’s’ successful offensive was possible due to the cessation of Russian and Syrian warplane activity, at the request of the United States, thus enabling the militants to reorganise fighters, ammunition and weapons.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, said on Saturday that the United States is requesting Russian airstrikes avoid targeting the al-Qaeda branch in Syria, the Al-Nusra Front. The United States defended its request to Russia, saying it asked Russia to avoid hitting civilians, but Russia denies it has been causing civilian casualties. The situation is fluid, with denial and rebuttal.

On Tuesday in the city of Idlib, rebels of the Jaysh Al-Fateh fired mortar shells and rockets at the communities of Al-Fou’aa and Kafraya. This was allegedly a retaliatory action for Russian airstrikes on these targets. Later, eight injured civilians were treated at a local field hospital.

Tuesday’s Russian airstrikes reportedly killed at least 23, with dozens injured, but news agency Russia Insider reported that soon after one Idlib strike, al-Qaeda was identified evacuating their collapsed headquarters. A photograph of one supposed Russian strike on a hospital in Idlib, on Monday, is claimed by Russia Insider to have been used six months previously by news agency Al Jazeera.

The Syrian opposition claims the Idlib hospital was targeted to punish civilians in rebel-held areas. But the Russian and Syrian governments assert they are generally targeting known al-Qaeda and ISIL buildings.
