The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) announced yesterday the proposed names of four chemical elements recently discovered by scientists around the world. According to the rules of IUPAC, the four names — nihonium, moscovium, tennessine, and oganesson — are to be subject to a five-month period of public scrutiny which ends November 2016. IUPAC allows the teams of scientists who discover and synthesize new elements to name them, subject to process.

Element number 113, nihonium, is named after the Japanese name for the country of JapanNihon — where it was first synthesized and discovered by researchers at the RIKEN institute.

Elements 115 and 117, moscovium and tennessine, were co-discovered by researchers in the United States and Russia. Moscovium’s name comes from the Moscow-based Joint Institute of Nuclear Research where researchers discovered the element. Similarly, tennessine is named after the US state of Tennessee where chemical research is commonly conducted.

Lastly, element number 118, oganesson, is named for a Russian physicist, Yuri Oganessian, team leader from the synthesis of tennessine, element 117.

Elements 113, 115, 117, and 118 complete the bottom row of the current periodic table. Further discoveries would likely add a new row on the table. Currently, these elements are given the systematic placeholder names ununtrium, ununpentium, ununseptium and ununoctium, respectively.

The elements are formed as a result of colliding two smaller atoms together to form a larger atom. These resultant atoms are made in small amounts, are generally unstable, and decompose into smaller components in periods of time less than a second.

IUPAC confirmed discovery of these four elements in December. These were the first confirmed discoveries since IUPAC confirmed elements 114 and 116, flerovium and livermorium, in 2011.

Stacey Gleeson, the mother of one-year-old Giana, saw her daughter blue through the baby monitor as she was sleeping. She immediately ran into her daughter’s room to try and resuscitate her through the method of CPR, but had dropped her phone on the way. Too far to reach the phone and needing her hands to help her child, she called out to her phone using the prompt “Hey Siri”. This command activates the Apple iPhone to start the personal voice assistant, Siri where you can ask to make reminders, send text and the like. Knowing this, Gleeson quickly asks Siri to call an ambulance. Gleeson was able to successfully alert the emergency services through her speaker phone and inform them any needed details. In what could have been a fatal accident, the aid of an in-built iPhone app has helped save a one-year-old child.

Giana was suffering from a severe case of bronchiolitis and chest infection before the incident. She started breathing again as paramedics arrived on scene.

Grateful that Siri was able to help in a time of need, Stacey Gleeson has personally thanked Apple in a letter. In an interview with BBC News she said, “Saving me the trouble of having to physically dial emergency services was a godsend.”

The incident happened last March but gained attention after Gleeson’s letter to Apple went viral.

Siri has also come to the rescue for a young mechanic, Sam Ray, when the jack failed and a truck pinned him down while doing some repairs last year. Ray was lucky that Siri was close by (in his pocket) so he could ask for emergency help without being able to physically call. Emergency services attended the scene and helped Ray from the truck. Being pinned under a truck for 40 minutes resulted in a bruised kidney, broken ribs, a concussion and burns on his arm.

Rode won two back-to-back Bundesliga titles, and a DFB-Pokal cup against Dortmund last month in which Dortmund lost in a penalty shootout decider. Rode has also featured in eleven UEFA Champions League matches for Munich and scored one goal.

Bayern München chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said, “Sebastian Rode asked us to release him from his contract because he thinks he has a chance to play on a regular basis in Dortmund”((de)).

After the transfer, Sebastian Rode said, “I’ve been a BVB fan since a child and am therefore delighted that a transfer to my favourite club worked out.”((de))
