Saturday, September 3, acclaimed Canadian author Margaret Atwood is to launch her graphic novel Angel Catbird, with illustrator Johnnie Christmas. The panel includes a question and answer session and an opportunity to purchase the book before its general release date. Other recent firsts from the 76-year-old Booker Award-winning Atwood include a chamber opera that debuted in 2014, participating in the Twitter Fiction Festival in 2015, and being the first writer included in the Future Library project, her Scribbler Moon not to be read until 2114.

Stan Lee, now 93, is in the midst of what he claims to be his final convention tour. As first announced in February, the Spider-Man, Iron-Man, and X-Men creator is to make his final Canadian convention appearance at Fan Expo. Also bidding adieu to the convention circuit are Adam West and Burt Ward, from the original Batman television series, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The remainder of the announced schedule includes various programs for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, including appearances by actors William Shatner, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols, the four day long Geekfest Film Festival, and a live script reading of Ghostbusters by voice acting legends Rob Paulsen, Bill Farmer, Maurice LaMarche, and David Hayter. Panels include The Dark Knight III team, including a rare appearance by Frank Miller, the cast of Sailor Moon, and an exclusive panel of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes.

The 750,000 square foot event projects “over 140,000” attendees this year to Toronto’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The first Blood Moon eclipse in the ongoing series of three happened on the night of August 5-6 2014. The second one took place was August 7-8, 2015, and the third one (the shortest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century) was August 19, 2016. It’ll be visible to sky watchers in the Southern Hemisphere, specifically the coast of southern England. Some will call it a Blood Moon.

The third blood moon in the series is expected to be spectacular in nature; lasting roughly an hour, it should be peaking at 12:00 PM GMT for those on the South Coast.

for Blood Moons in Biblical prophecy. We’re not experts on prophecy of any kind. But we’ll tell you what we know about the new definition for Blood Moon that has raised so many questions in the past few years.

From what we’ve been able to gather, two Christian pastors, Mark Blitz and John Hagee, used the term Blood Moon to apply to the full moons of the ongoing tetrad – four successive total lunar eclipses, with no partial lunar eclipses in between, each of which is separated from the other by six lunar months (six full moons) – in 2014 and 2015. John Hagee appears to have popularized the term in his 2013 book Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change.

Mark Blitz and John Hagee speak of a lunar tetrad as representing a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. After all, the moon is supposed to turn blood red before the end times, isn’t it? As described in Joel 2:31 (Common English Bible):

The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood before the great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.

That description, by the way, sounds like a combined total solar eclipse and total lunar eclipse. It sounds like a description of a total eclipse by someone who perhaps has never seen one. Sun turned to darkness = moon directly between the Earth and sun in a total solar eclipse. Moon turned to blood = Earth directly between the sun and moon, Earth’s shadow falling on the moon in a total lunar eclipse. Solar and lunar eclipses are very ordinary and frequent happenings that have occurred many times in our lifetimes, but they don’t happen, can’t happen, ever, on the same day.

Fall out from coup strains relations between Turkey and the West

General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Joint Chief of Staff, the country’s highest-ranking military official, met with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yidrim on Monday, in an attempt to reduce tensions between the two NATO allies.

Following the failed July 15 coup, Turkey is frustrated by NATO criticism of its subsequent treatment of suspected coup plotters: including allegations of torture, imprisonment, and sackings, of those within educational, judicial and civil service sectors. More than 60,000 from these sectors have been arrested or placed under investigation since the coup, allegedly because of their affiliation with Fethullah Gulen.

Gulen, is a US-based Muslim cleric that the Turkish government blames for orchestrating the coup. Turkey has asked for the US to extradite Gulen to face charges of treason. However, Washington state they will not do so, until provided with sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

Tensions between the two nations have exacerbated further as a result of recent incidents of protestors burning American flags outside of the NATO airbase at Incirlik amid allegations that US officials quietly backed the mutiny. Allegations in which the US has vehemently denounced. Turkey remains a crucial ally of the US in its fight against Islamic State with the NATO airbase at Incrilik acting as a vital strategic foothold in the region. Dunford’s visit also comes at a time in which the Turkish and Russian governments have resumed friendly relations with one another.

Dunford said that his visit was intended as a sign of solidarity and to reaffirm “the importance of the U.S.-Turkey relationship — the need for us to cooperate,” Dunford said the tone in all the meetings was positive and “not accusatory at all.”

On Monday warplanes from the United States (US) launched strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) positions in Sirte, Libya.

The strikes were requested by the United Nations-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) as they try to remove ISIL from the city. The militant group have held the city since last year, amidst the divisions in Libya following Muammar Gaddafi‘s removal as leader in 2011.

Libyan planes have previously bombed Sirte, but lack the capability to launch precision strikes. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said these were the targets which had been targeted by the US strikes.

Forces loyal to the GNA have been engaged with ISIL in Sirte since May; in mid-July the government claimed the compaign had made its greatest gains yet. These forces are reportedly mostly comprised of militia from Misrata.

This is the first time the US has coordinated strikes with the GNA, although they have previously conducted strikes against ISIL targets in Libya. The last targeted an ISIL training camp in February.

Western officials had estimated there were as many as 6,000 ISIL fighters in Libya some months ago. Mr Cook stated there are now less than 1,000.

US officials have said the air campaign is ongoing.
