Writing 2400 Strategy 15 – Avoid awkward phrases

Like passive voice “errors,” awkward phrases generally appear as secondary errors on the SAT. Awkward phrasing makes one answer choice worse than another in IMPROVING SENTENCES questions.

“Being” is almost always wrong on the SAT.

Incorrect: “Being a former long distance runner, the older senior at the gym looked much younger than his age.”Incorrect: “The author lost much of his readership being that his comments in the media were politically controversial.”

“Is why”, “Is because” and “is the reason” These phrases are almost always wrong on the SAT.

The answer key for this problem set is on page 132.
