Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a genetic disorder that effects light sensing of the retina that effects over 80 000 people in the world. Though this degenerative condition has yet to be treated or cured, research has been found in herbal remedies such as traditional Chinese plant remedies Lycium barbarum or wolfberry, as reported from a team in Hong Kong.

The team from the Polytechnic University in Hong Kong gathered 23 patients to study. Some given the remedy while the others are given a placebo. This research has shown that the people that took the Lycium barbarum showed less deterioration in the retina after several tests. The plant is said to have a neuroprotective effect that may minimise the process of deterioration.

“Our results confirm that the 6 months LB treatment for RP patients had marginal significant improvement in low-contrast VA and central visual sensitivity,” said the researchers.
