Today, when YouTube server tracks the total views on videos, it also tracks how long each person is watching your video. Simultaneous views may result in a watch time total that far exceeds the age of the video, for example, a total of 100 years of watch time on a six month old video. But six years ago, the idea of “watch time” was still in its beta phrase as a plan for the near future. A week from now, YouTube will have had watch time data that extend over six years. It was six years ago on September 1, 2012, that YouTube had finally began to keep track of the time for each view and keep track of the totals.
